Default Ton's of engine swap questions for you Gurus

ok, so I tore apart my engine (as best as I could with it in the car) and found that my #4 piston has a small piece missing (about the size of a lady bug and about 1/32" deep into the piston) and that is why I heard all the piston slap and noise. I am going to be pulling the engine in the next few days (gonna miss racing in the Rally-x atthe Prescott Forrest rally ) and I have a few question.

Let's get this out of the way, I did a search and nothing

1) I got the Passenger head of of the car but I'm guessing that there is no way to get the driver head off until I pull the engine right?

2) can I pull the engine without taking the tranny out or anything? In other words, can I unbolt the bellhousing from the engine and leave the tranny/bellhousing in place by just unding the engine mounts and moving the engine forward? Also, does the radiator need to come out?

3) Obviously a hoist is recomended but can two people lift the engine and pull it? I lifted my new EJ22T short block and it doesn't feel to heavy

4) do I need to lift the car for any reason?

Thanks!

Eric

Default Re: Ton's of engine swap questions for you Gurus

Okay first off.. I'm not a guru, I've never done this before.. but I have been witness to it and I did pay careful attention, so I'll answer a few questions.. at least what I know...

2) can I pull the engine without taking the tranny out or anything? In other words, can I unbolt the bellhousing from the engine and leave the tranny/bellhousing in place by just unding the engine mounts and moving the engine forward? Also, does the radiator need to come out?

When I saw it done on an OBS, it appears the tranny was still attached, well most of it.. just the clutch area and everything from that on to the engine was taken apart. The radiator was also still in the car at the time. Again.. I'm no guru so take it with a grain of salt, but I'm at least trying to be helpful..

3) Obviously a hoist is recomended but can two people lift the engine and pull it? I lifted my new EJ22T short block and it doesn't feel to heavy

This one I got.. when it was pulled out it was done using a hoist, but afterwards the guys doing it noted that it was really light, so its possible you could do it with 2 or 3 ppl, I'd still recommend a hoist.. to do some CYA, but its not heavy

4) do I need to lift the car for any reason?

I don't believe so.. the ppl I watched didn't.

...poke around the NESIC forum.. there are pictures of what I was talking about.. two guys pulled out the engine out of an OBS to change headgaskets and other minor things, but I do know for a fact there are pictures lying around...

Sure, I'll give it a shot.

1. If you pulled the passenger side heads, that's the #1 (front) and #3 (rear) side. Try it - if you can't get the other header out, then at least you still have the option of pulling the engine.

2. Pull the tranny bolts, undo the engine mounts, jack up the engine off the crossmember, and get a prybar to separate the tranny from the engine. The radiator has to come out or you will surely damage it while separating the two. Use a sheet of plywood to protect the A/C condenser, which you can leave in the car.

3. I'm a scrawny weakling, so there was no way I could have lifted that engine out of the car, even if there was four of me. Rent an engine hoist for a day if you have to. The last thing you need is for someone to lose a grip and drop the engine on your fender or front bumper.

4. You may need to jack up the car to get at the exhaust header bolts and lower tranny bolts.
