Default carputer used to monitor ECU?

I have done some searching to no avail, maybe i am not searching for the right keywords. I know next to nothing about tuning, and it does intimidate me, however i am interested in learning, and am mechanically inclined.

Anyway, i installed a carputer in my 2001 RS to do the usual music, movies, GPS, etc. I also know that it is possible to tune/monitor a vehicle using a laptop/computer through the ECU. I would like to have my carputer do that as well. I would love to have a "virtual gage" if you will, where i can display data from my ECU (in gage form) on my touchscreen, and eventually i want to be able to retune the ECU from the carputer touchscreen as well.

What kind of software/hardware would i need for this? What kind of hardware/software is out there? Anyone else had success doing something like this?

Any info is much appreciated. Thanks,

-Sean

Check out ECU Explorer. It's free and gets you most of what you want and I believe it would work on your car:
http://www.tari.co.za/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl
You could use the Cobb accesport cable for this, or else you have to buy one. For the gages there is some discussion under data logging software at the link below. Nothing that I have seen is put in a nice package like the ECU Explorer.

there are some out there who are using touchscreens, and some with keyboard's and mice. I like the idea of the touchscreen, just not into using the on screen keyboard in order to make changes to the tune on my utec.

I'm useing Tari with the cobb cable on my carputer, and it works great.

I had no idea people had virtual gauges working yet. I will have to check that out! (I though paying some extravigant ammount of money for DeltaDash was currently the only way to get this).

This one is the best that I have seen for the virtual guges.:

May have to register to see the screen shots. It has MAF, Boost, IAM, Knock correction, EGT and IAT with some max and min values.

The double DIN slot allows for a complete Mini-ITX system in there, with hard disk, PSU and a 7" 16x9 touch screen.

Makes me wish I had gone with the lilliput screen instead of the xenarc.

yeah, i was looking at that recently. I personally went with a fold out screen, but that site www.mp3car.com is an awesome site in general for anyone wanting to build a carputer.

can the lilliput screen work with just a deck also? or is it strictly for use with a carputer? i currently have a pioneer deck (exactly like the one pictured above) that plays dvd, mp3, etc. i need a monitor though. i was looking at the one on mp3car.com, but i'm not sure if that's only for use with carputers. anybody got input? thanks.

Cool

hey,
you guys probably figured something out, but for everyone else who's searching, there's always deltadash by ecutek. (sorry no link, i'm still a noob) digital on computer realtime guages, that's my plan for the summer!

Lots of touchscreens have an RCA input or two as well as the PC's VGA. I run that, with a very small ebay keyboard and TabletPC installed in WinXP. The TabletPC onscreen ketboard is a lot nicer than any others I've tried. But it isn't free. There is and onscreen keyboard in WinXP and a google search will turn up several freware/shareware keyboards.

I use the UTI tuner software (see the Official UTEC interface thread) which I have set to boot right into so I don't have to mess with anything other than getting in, starting the car, and driving. He's setup big buttons and it's a great program, but it's UTEC only with support for some outboard W/B meters.

I understand there are a few Linux-esque OSs out there designed to run a little more seemlessly in a carPC setup but I haven't tried those. I run wireless in the car too and don't need the headaches of trying to network something like that. I'm not as haxor-l33t as I pretend to be.

Also, if you are going to get a W/B there are setups like the innovate LM-1 that have a ton of auxiliary input modules for RPM, TPS etc..etc... and they have software that comes with it that can put 6 gauges on the screen. I ran that for several months before geting the UTEC, and I actually like Innovate's gauges for simplicity, viewability and reaction time over all the others I've seen.

Just some ideas...
