Post Correct offset for 17s?

Some people say that it's 48, while others say you should stick to the same offset as you run with 16s, andf that the folks who claim 48 are just saying that because they're trying to sell 48 offset rims.

What's the real story here?

I run 17X7 with 50 offset. Just from eye-balling on how it fits, 48 should also be no problem.

I know that 48 will work, but is that the "best" option, as some will suggest. Or does the Subaru offset of 55(?) hold true for 17s, also. I'll be looking for wheels one we dig out of the Chicago winter, and I want to get the wheel with the best offset for my vehicle, period. After all, nothing worth doing is worth doing halfway.

45-48 is the least you should have.

You will notice that the car will feel a bit more "squirrley" at low speeds because the tires are closer to the center of the vehicle than the stock wheels.
