Default Note to self, RE: The self-checkout at the grocery store

Any time that you save by using the self checkout is negated if you are buying alcohol. After you are done scanning everything the checkout person has to come over and look at your ID anyway.

I guess I wasn't really surprised. I was expecting them to have to come over as soon as I scanned my case of beer, but it waits until the very end to start blinking the attention light.

I love self checkout. It's really handy when you only want a few items and all the lines are backed up with senior citizens and moms with kids.

look, if they gave me a discount for doing my own work, i'd have no problem doing it. even if i have a couple of items, i will go through the express check-out. even if there is a line. my time is valuable, but i will also not spend my time working for somebody without being compensated.

self checkouts are not about being faster. They are about the store not having to pay someone to do it.

<---- PO'ed that I have to pay high prices, check it myself, and bag my own ****

Self checkout is fantastic unless you have an bakery or fresh produce goods. Except for Wegmans where you get a bar code to put on your fresh produce when you weigh them, it sucks having to flip through a book of possible produce and put the codes in the self checkout.

The lady's voice on my local Weis store self checkout freaks me out a little bit. Plus she sucks at realizing my **** is already on the conveyor belt so she better stop asking.

I've seen lines down the aisles for the regular checkouts while self-checkouts are nearly empty.

People are dumb.

Self-Checkout is garbage. 85% of the people in front of you have no idea how to use it, which makes everything drag on much longer. 95% of the time the stupid thing ****s up and has to call someone over anyway. I agree with the Mexican Truck.

you are getting compensated by saving some time. Thats if you work the machine right.

maybe for your local store, but mine takes literally 5 seconds between scans, due to the sensors that must pick up the item on the belt. A normal checkout person can work much faster...3-4 times faster.

I love the self checkout, but only if there is no one using it in front of me. I figure I'm smarter than the average checkout clerk and will get my stuff done right. I even use it with produce because the Stop&Shop version has an easy to use touch screen where you press "lookup produce" and then it has the common 25 or so displayed and then the alphabet on the bottom to look for something uncommon. I just hate when idiots who can't do anything technical think they can figure it out and take 15 minutes to pay... I know I am doing the work of a cashier for myself, but it eliminates having to deal with them and some one bagginf my stuff wrong...

The wicked annoying part with the self checkout at SS&S is that it uses a touch screen to run the machine and a seperate debit/CC card devise so to pay it's like this:
Touch Screen:Finish & Pay button
TS:Payment Type, Debit button
Card Machine:Swipe Card
CM:Type of Card, Debit
CM: Enter Pin
TS:Cash Back? No
CM:Total OK, Yes
Where if they just implemented a card reader on the touch screen it would go much easier. The problem is these 2 devices are like 3' apart which generates problems for the people who haven't used them before. The can only concentrate on one device at a time and have to walk over to one, then when the other is asking a question they don't realize this and that's what takes so long... Once you figure it out it's just a PITA but this is what messes up eveyone the first time and take forever...

I wish I could buy alcohol at the grocery store though... Here in RI they have NA beer and wine, but no real beer. Plus the best part is they will card you to buy NA beer???

That's my experience, anyway. Almost every time I've used it I have landed in a loop [put in bag, removed from bag, repeat] of some sort.

At least the person in front of you isn't (most of the time) making lonely small talk to the computer.

For fun get in front of someone that looks like they are in a big hurry, then pull out a big bag of nickles. plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk, plunk.

I had to chuckle last night. I put in the number for my produce and the voice goes...

"Please removed your <long pause> ASPARAGUS <long pause> from the scanner area."
