Default Question on EM's that are out there now.

OK. i have been searching for three days now and just have not found anything that answers my questions. I get bits and pieces however nothing is really what i am looking for. I am sorry for asking this because i am sure that there are many of other people that have asked this. But there are many of you out there that have the knownledge to help me out and i appreciate it all.

I had a 02 wrx stage 4 with utec. I just got myself a 05 sti and was looking at EM again. I understood my utec and found it rather easy to mess around with and change things. I didnt like the cost of the add ons for it but all in all it was a good tool. The biggest gripe i had about it was that whenever the car would cross over from ECU to Utec there was a bump. Sometimes it was small and other times it was bad enough that i just wanted to take the utec out.

Now with AP, Ecutek, Utec. Is there anybody that can describe to me the benifit of them. I am looking at achieving 400whp from my STI. My biggest thing is that i want a em that is smooth, that keeps the cleaness of the stock feel, not jumpy or bumpy. From my other car to the STI, it is a world of differnece.

Now i see that there are a lot of people that are using AP, and Ecutek. Why are they so much better or worse than just going with a utec. Is it that much more cost effective or the results better from them than from a utec.

Only EM solutions that will keep the smothness of stock are flash type ones. EcuTek and AP are the ones 2 that do that as of right now. EcuTek you can't tune yourself because the software is only available to shops... the AP you can, with Street Tuner and also can be Pro flashes by shops with ProTuner software. I think there are some limitations in Street Tuner software on what you can tune, but I don't have the specifics on that. Maybe someone with ST will chime in.

Flashable EM solutions are the only way to go if you want an invisible EM solution that will make your car feel like it came from the factory like that. As long as the tune is good you won't even know it's there... it's as if it was designed that way. At least that's how I feel about my EcuTek tune.

JRSCCivic98 is correct. The reflash type EM solutions are the smoothest. In the same breath I will also tell you that a good UTEC tuner can make one hell of a smooth running car with a UTEC. Regardless, I think that the AccessPort is the best EM solution available on the market today for most people (notice that I said most people).

The stock Subaru engine computers are very advanced. They have the ability to learn and adjust several values to keep the car running well in different situations. A good example of this is the difference between hot summer days verses cold winter days. Since the AP remaps the factory ECU with different values to match the various up-rated parts installed on your car it has the ability to continue to learn.

On the other hand, if you want to run water injection or something like that you will need a UTEC, Hydra, etc... I will let others explain the piggy back and standalone systems since I dont really have that much experience with them.

Standalones will also be smoother than factory if tuned correctly. However price tag increases and if you really want to mess around with it, there can be a steep learning curve. The Hydra is an awesome EM; but if 400hp on a somewhat simple setup is what you want, the Cobb AP would probably be an easier/better solution.

Standalones will not pass emission testing if you have that in your area. They don't have onboard OBDII capabilities.

with the AP and Ecutek. My question is, when i had the utec and was messing around with that. The thing i hated the most was chasing the knock. it seem as if you could only tune for down low or up top. Becuase if you made ita great low end car then you would recieve a ton of knock when in higher gears and vice versa. If the reflash allows the cars ecu to learn.. does it make ever gear as strong as it can or is it just doing the same thing as a utec tune.
