Unhappy Kartboy Shifter Part II

Well... I don't know what to think at this point:

(remember I have a 2000 Legacy GT Wagon)

A month or so back I put in the Kartboy shifter and bushings, and right away I started hearing this high-pitched whine that matched the vehicle speed coming from the "transmission area". Also there was a more pronounced "harshness" to the sound of the engine resistance when I lifted the throttle. So, I pulled the shifter out and put the stockker in to make sure it was not something else. Well, yesterday I put the Kartboy back in and right away I started hearing the different sounds. I also noticed that I could get it to "grind" a bit if I pulled it down towards me in 2nd (yeah, I know... "just don't do that")

Basically I want to know if I am *hurting* anything, or if there is just an increased noise, because if it is just noise that is not a problem (sounds meaner now). But if I am messing something up in the shift linkages then I might have to sell my kartboy...

Jim, how much longer did you make your shifter on the low end? (background: Euroauto/Jim has a DYI short-shifter he made himself) That is the only part of the shifter that could mechanically effect the car.

Otherwise I love it.. it is such a short throw, and makes driving so much more fun...

Let me know what you think... Should I leave it in, should I leave it out? *sigh*

If your only concern is the sound, it is fine. Basically since the bushings are much harder, they tend to transmit more noise from your tranny. The whinning noise that you hear is your diff. One thing, that the top plastic cover off and make sure that when in 1st gear the shifter doesn't touch the metal surounding that is holding the rubber cover.

Yeah... I didn't think to see if it was touching some of the interior pieces... that is probably it (gonna go look now)... The 2000 GT's have quite a bit of padding and sound insulation down there, in a few gears (5th especially) the nut-and-bold dig into the sound insulation...

edit - good call Alex. In first and third the shift linkage just barely touches the mount plate for the shifter in the inside of the car. I never saw it before because of all the foam. I still did not see what it could be hitting when it is in fifth, but probably it is the same thing, I'll keep an eye on it. Probably would all go away if I got the STi shift linkages... maybe someday when I have $200.

edit 2: check this -

This is the STi shift-kit... you can see where the main linkage has a "bend" in it to clear the front of the boot. I think we need to get Kartboy to make that center linkage for us.

I think that the Kartboy shifter is solid, the Euroauto shifter is isolated. I left the rubber in the shifter to cut down on noise that transfers up the shifter. I also had the braket problem in first and third.

On a different note I have a SOA 17x7 wheel today to see if it will fit the four piston calipers. I will let you know.
