Apparently I signed up on carpoint a while ago to be told about any recalls for the OB. I go an e-mail to this link today
That says this:
Recall Alert: SUBARU LEGACY
Owner Notification Date: Aug 29, 2000
Number of Units Potentially Affected: 223,520
Component Description: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:ALTERNATOR:REGULATOR:STARTER:OTHER PART
NHTSA Campaign Number: 00I002000
Description of Recall Campaign: This is not a safety defect in accordance with the Safety Act. However, it is
deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency.
Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. Some of these vehicles have an
alternator problem that can result in a loss of charging capability.
If the alternator fails, the alternator warning telltale will alert the driver
to the problem, giving ample opportunity to seek repair before a loss of battery
power, which, if the warning were ignored, could ultimately result in a loss of
vehicle power (engine stall).
Dealers will replace the alternator with a modified alternator. Owners will
also be cautioned that, should the alternator telltale warning lamp illuminate,
they must seek immediate repair to avoid the eventual loss of electrical power,
which could result in an engine stall.
Subaru has decided to conduct a Service Program to replace the alternator.
Owners can contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783, concerning this program.

This has already happened to me.
I was driving my car and all of the sudden the tach was moving all over the place and the check engine light came on. The car didn't drive any different though. It only did that when the rpm's were over 3.5k. I took it to the dealer and they put in a new alternator and I was on my way.

Same thing here about a month ago. Tach and speedo were all over the place or dropped to zero (at 65 mph), ABS light glowed dimly, headlights if on would dim. In one extreme instance, the power door locks were cycling repeatedly. Dropping rpm's back under 2K would return things to normal.
Dealer blamed the aftermarket alarm system at first but I insisted they take it for a test drive.
They replaced the alternator. All better now.
Sidebar: I am putting the car (97 Legacy GT) up for sale. Just took delivery on a MY2001 Audi S4 This thing is scary fast.

What model years does this affect? I have a '92 with 113,500 miles and have not had any alternator problems yet.
