Default EJ22 SOHC Dual Port or Single?

Ok I have a 1998 L Wagon wth the EJ22 SOHC motor in it. I am looking to get me some headers for the car. now i have read a few threads that said that the only headers that will work for my motor are the Borla ones. this has been said to be cus my motor is single port. But i swear i have read that some of the later EJ22 motors (97 and Up if i remember correctly) were said to be dual port. the reason why i ask this is cus i see alot of websites like Rallitek that say that their headers will work with the IMP/GC8/LEG/FOR/BJ. this leads me to belice that their EL headers will work with my motor. Is there any way to find out for sure besides removing my stock headers? Does anyone have any detailed info on the motors from subaru like the 1.8L the 2.0L the 2.2L and the 2.5L ???

EJ22 dual port motors were from when they first came out, up until about '97. I'm not sure of the exact date. It's easy though. if you see only one big exhaust tube coming down from your head on each side, it is converged single port.

btw - you can swap heads and thereby increase your aftermarket product base.

Well, you can do it with the engine in the car, but to me, it takes longer. I can pull a motor in a decent enough time that it seems worth just pulling to be able to do the work elsewhere.

For the heads, it depends. One junkyard could run you $50. or the whole motor for $100 (yes, it does happen) or whathave you. if you bought them new, you'd be paying a MUCH higher price.

Last time I replaced my heads, it took four days of working on it in the evenings. But I also had most of one day that I worked on it, waiting for my heads and exhaust.

You'l pay somewhere between $200 to $250 for a full gasket kit for your car.

Take a peak under you car and you should be able to tell if it's single or dual port. The thing with swapping heads is you have to make sure your getting the correct bolt pattern for your intake manifold. You should do a cost analysis on swapping heads vs. ej25 drop in.

do a search for manual trans swaps, check out gruppe-s online, and ebay for motors. sometimes EJ25's in good condition can be had for like $500. you never know.
