Question Am i in trouble??

my mom started up her 2000 Outback this morning to go to work and the "check engine" light came on!!! OH NO!!! now i told her she needs to take it to the dealer. no here comes the trouble

i have scene here that the dealer can actually tell how much time you spend at WOT and redline!!! is the dealer going to beable to tell that i rev the crap outta it and shift at redline when i drive aggressively. If so will they care?? Or tell my mom??

i do know the Mechanic who will probably work on the car and i know the service manager at the dealer. They are both people i ice race with so i'm sure they probably know that i beat the crap outta it. but i don't want my mom do know!!!

any ideas on what i could be?? it's a 2000 Outback with 5-spd obviously. any ideas?? i checked and the gas cap was tight. what else can i check?? i hope it's something stupid or simple that's not my fault

Please tell me if i can prepare for the crap dealing from my mom.

Thanks in advance,

I really wouldn't worry. People have heard some rediculous things from service departments, but "you're CEL was due to the fact that you opened up the throttle 26 times over the course of 12.9 miles" hasn't been one of them.

well see the bad thing that you did was that you told you mom to see the dealer... are you nuts... the first thing that I would have done is told her that she would be fine and you'll check it out when she gets back.... and when she come back from work... all you do is disconect the battery... that clears the CE lite.... and Ta DA! its done and over with... remember to unplug the batery for an hour.. plug it back in start it up w/o gas let it sit for 10 mins... shut it off and then turn it back on and from there your out in the clear... if in two weeks (just for instance) it comes back on then you personaly should take it to the dealer... seeing that you are friends with the people who are going to work on it you'll know the info before your mom does.... BUT! you didn't do that... so in the sake of time... give your mom a call and say that you figured it out and that you'll fix it... and resort to the above.... I hope this helps... also I never heard of an engine management computer keeping tabs on how many times the it was a@ WOT or anything like that.... the last thing I remember is that all the ECU is record data like air, heat, and the exiting gasses... this could lead to figure out if it was @ WOT... but still its a big hunch.... if anything its mostly like a bad o2 sensor... I hope this helps... but next time something arises please consult the i-club board!

Uh, whatever. Just take it to the dealer, get the code diagnosed, and then deal with it. They aren't going to care a rats arse how the car was treated...the redline is there for a reason. Better to know what's wrong with the car NOW than to have it crapout on you in the middle of BFE.

Default thanks guys

thanks for the advice.

now a new question. is there anyway to read the fault codes and see what the hell is the matter?? does the check engine light flash if you just turn the key to on or something?? Is there an LED on the computer. cause i'm just curious and i want to get this off my mind.

the o2 sensor makes sense cause i have heard of them going bad in passing. i hope that's it.

find a friend with an ODB-II scanner and they can check and clear the codes in a instant.

Good luck diagnosing an electonically controlled car.

No, the Subes don't have a flash CE code read feature. You'll need a OBDII scanner of some sort.

BFE is 100 miles past the middle of nowhere. Bum Fuuked Egypt. Also known as East Jesus.

OBDII can reset a light by itself. If a condition occurs (say, a mis-fire), and does not occur again within a set period (key cycles, miles driven, etc.) then the light will clear. The code may also clear, but some remain in the computer. You may still be able to get the code read, but if the light has disappeared (and ergo the condition is not occuring) you won't be able to diagnose it yourself.

Default ok got more info

i just talked to my mom and she told me the story.

my dad woke up to go to work and moved the car onto the street which might have taken like 30 seconds of running. then shut it off. about 10-15 mins later me and my mom went to leave. and the light came on. the first thing i did was get her to pop the gas door and i checked to make sure the Gas Cap was tight and it was. my mom dropped me and the light was still on. so she continued to work. half way to work in stop and go traffic while coasting to a stop in first gear with the clutch in the car stalled. the key was still at on.. so she flicked to start and started again obviously but didn't turn the key to off or acc. she said it cranked a couple times and made a bang (i'm guessing a Backfire). and the light was off.

so wheres my theroy.

my dad started the car and backed onto the street and this morning was somewhat cold. so the car was putting lotsa gas into the motor. then shut it off. but there was a rich condition and maybe it got the o2 sensor wet or fouled it slightly. So when my mom started the car is was giving a bad 02 sensor reading. then after the driving and it stalled cause of no gar being put into the engine while dropping to idle cause the o2 sensor still sensed a rich condition cause it was wet or fouled. then the backfire cleared out all the carbon/excess gas/or dried the o2 sensor and clear the trouble code.

she said there was no problem driving it home and i just drove it to drop off my sister around the corner. and it pulled/ran fine..

i'm still questioning as to give it an Italian Tune up this evening. i dunno.

and Julian...you doubting my skills i have been driving karts since i was 12 and cars since i was 11. i have this natural talent i think. i can tell you almost exactly what;s wrong with your car by driving it. weather it's rich, lean, or just running like crap. i have also been able to tell by driving out ice racer that the n/a exhaust was too big and the motor was loosing power. so we made a restrictor put it in. and well it was ALOT faster!! HEHE.. i'm good at this stuff...

oh yeah i'm good at driving also.

It sounds like you're spending way to much time thinking about this check engine light. If it went off, don't worry about it. Other than a huge mechanical failure, it won't leave you stranded anywhere (especialy BFE) The ECU will only record some long turn fuel maps. The dealer can see how rich the motor's been running. They can't void your warranty for having fun with the car!!!
