Default McCulloch HID Kits

I'm seriously considering a McCulloch HID kit for my '05 WRX. I like the 6k or the 8k bulbs, nice and white a little blue but not ricey. Anyone have any experience with these kits? www.xenonking.com has them all, looks at the bimmer's lights when you click on one, they change with the "heat" you choose. I don't want to have any problems with melting my headlight housing or anything like that .

i dunno much about HID kits, but from what i heard, its bad to install a kit on your stock lights. the stock reflectors is not made for HIDz

consider STi Hidz or retrofit?

8k is very ricey blue. Stick with 6k or less. OEMs generally use about 4500.

Yeah, now that I seen "real time" pics of them I'm going to get the 6k's. Wow those look awsome TxWrX. Did you have to disconnect the Daytime Running Lights to install them?

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) 06 WRX's have projector headlights while all the other years don't. So if you dont have projector headlights your HID's will look different from his. Yours would just scatter everywhere and your whole headlight would glow & "bleed" that color out (ricey) instead of being a neat beam, OEM looking.

Yeah the DRL's had to go. Just unplugged the unit from behind the glovebox. Also had to drill a nickle-size hole in the headlight caps, for wire purposes. The hole gets covered up by a rubber grommet included with the kit. So all in all, I've had this kit for about 2 yrs no problems. Just it ripped out of my Rx8 and into my WRX. Very good kits man.

Dude, that's very true. I completely forgot he didn't have projectors.

i had a HID kit on my bugeye and it sucked. sprayed light everywhere. as i'd pass people they'd shield their eyes from their own side mirror, and would then flash me afterwards (and not in the good way ).

If I can get the parts, I think I might do a retrofit HID. Theres a link on here where he does a TSX retrofit on a '05 WRX and they look really good too. I just don't want to F anything up

I was looking at the "Complete Bosch Xenon D2S HID Projector Package" for $400 bucks off www.hidplanet.com, it comes with
# (2) Bosch Projectors
# (2) Hella/Philips LVQ-212 G3 Ballasts
# (2) D2S HID Bulbs
# (2) Ballast Covers/mounts
# (2) Ballast connectors
Would I need anything else? I don't want to sound stupid but whats "cutoff" I hear it alot but I couldn't figure out what it means.. Anyone have any reccomendations on a template for the crossover.

The cutoff line is the beam pattern emmitted by projectors. It prevents the blinding of oncoming drivers. It looks like this:

yeh, stay away from McCulloch, they may be cheaper now, but theyll die out a lot sooner then phillips, and its not the bulbs, but the ballast so more expensive.

my ballasts did break and i had to search long and hard for a replacement. i just sold it all together since it was a total pos. i even called mcculloch for a replacement but they would not give me one for no proof of purchase since i bought it used.

IIRC, the generation one kits are suspect. The ones after have had less complaints - although I would still not buy McCulloch (they do not offer 4300K kits). Do a search for McCulloch HID on here and you'll find out more

And read the HID FAQ atop this forum...

Reverse Manifold FTW

Default Retrofit only

The stock ballasts already do a bad job spreading the light and the HID's will just blind the hell out of everyone.

Retrofit is the only way to go (in my opinion), as I am doing right now for my ongoing project...

i own 3 mcculloch kits and have never had a problems with any of them, i have 8000k, 6000k and 3000k. 6000k and 3000k are in an '04 wagon and working great for over a year now. i had the 8000k kit in my bugeye for almost 3 years and they survived the accident and are still working on a friends jetta. for an '04-'05 the h1 hid will not be any different looking than the stock bulbs except brighter. the filement on the bulb is the same distance from the base as the hid bulbs arc. beam patern is the same as stock and damn near no upward glare. never been highbeamed and ive even driven in front of my car while somebody else was driving and i didnt find it annoying or blinding at all.
