fast idle problem - need advice please

I'm new to Subarus and would appreciate any help available from those more knowledgable... thanks

2004 Impreza TS2.5 wagon. No mods. 61k km (40k miles)

At cold start, fast idle ranges between 1700 & 2000 RPM. When driving away cold, fast idle increases. With each upshift, idle will remain high, even 2-3k RPM and very slowly drop to about 1800 RPM if the clutch is kept depressed.

After engine warms up to operating temps, idle remains fast for another 20 minutes or so of driving time.

Dealer has been unable to resolve (normally very good dealer service)

Inherent problem with the throttle on our cars. Subaru NA is working on a fix right now for mine. Take a look at my other threads- hope it helps.

i have the exact same issue in my '06 wrx wagon.

and i thought i was going crazy

the 04 isn't drive by wire, so in your case check the center wire of the tps sensor and make sure it's .5 volts closed throttle, if it's not adjust it, then reset the ecu. this can cause wierd idle on n/a cars. so can a bad coolant temp sensor, but that usually sets a code.

Loosen the cable that routes to the Cruise control box. It is down near the turbo. I loosened mine to have 1/4 inch play in the cable and the issue you described above went away.
