Thumbs up Kartboy shifter installed..

I got the Kartboy short shifter and Cusco bushings installed this weekend. I've got one word:

SWEET.

Thanks to the guys at Kartboy and for those responsible for the installation instructions. It was a breeze. Getting the bushings in was a bit of a pain due to the heat sheilding, but with a little patience, it went fine. The shifter went in in about 15 minutes. The bushings took about 45.

Thanks again!

Question

What year is your car? I am looking to have the same thing done. I had contacted them as well as teaques auto who did not have a 90 legacy stick for them to work off of. I have not gone out to find one to send to them so they can make one.

Right ON!

I should have mine today or tomorrow... Everyone talks about "tricks" to getting the bushings in, do you have any extra info on what these tricks might be? Oh, did you have any problem taking apart the console? I have not even looked at how to *get* to the shifter...

felix - look at his user name...

This link has very clear pics on how to get the bushing out:
http://www.azscooby.freeservers.com/...aty/cusco.html

Basically, you have to use the mounting stud to push the old bushing out. You have to push really hard to pop it out...I mean really push. It's tough to do this when you don't have room to move around under the car.

As for the shifter console on the MY00, just unscrew the shifter knob and pop out the console. It's secured only by snaps.

Sorry for the growly-face on the post... UBB was not updating the thread, so the Legacy board said there were 4 follups, but I only saw two, once I posted it seemed to fix... I see you were having trouble too, bob...

Thanks for the info... it does not look like it came today, maybe it will be here tomorrow.

There are two sets of directions that I looked at.

This one shows how to do the shifter for an Impreza, but it's basically the same as the Legacy.
http://www.impreza-rs.com/images/mod...hiftermod.html

It's here on the "i" Club under Modifcations.

As for the bushings, I found the link to instructions on the Kartboy homepage.
http://www.azscooby.freeservers.com/Peaty/cusco.html

Make sure you tighten the nut on the shifter link stud. The bushings are hard to get seated by hand. The basic idea is to put them on and tighten the nut against the washer plate, letting the nut do the work of seating them. Take a look at how far the stud is sticking out of the stock bushing for reference.

I didn't tighten mine enough and had a brief scare when I couldn't shift into any gears. Had to fix it at work and got myself nice and greasy.

Felix, I emailed Tom yesterday about a 90-94 shifter. If he gets back to me with the details( price, how soon, etc.) I may be able to get an old shifter to send him so he can see what he would be working with. I'll post any info I get from him.

Felix( and other early Legacy guys), Tom(kartboy) will be away until next week, but he said he is going to get on it very soon, just have to discuss the details. I'll keep you posted. Finally it won't feel like I'm shifting a Kenworth

Question

Hi guys, can anyone tell me if the shifter and bushings will fit a 97-98 legacy? I did those instructions and pics on the AZScooby site. I have a local guy that I'd like to help and install Kartboy stuff in his car but I wasn't sure if it's the same. I suspect it is though.

Thumbs up

Hey Peaty, this is Rich from Tulsa, with the white Legacy. I installed the SPT shifter (which is marketed at the Imprezas) into my Legacy. It fit, no problem. I would imagine if the whole linkage assembly would work, then everything is the same.

Hi Peaty, I've got the Kartboy shifter on a '97 GT. Works great!
I think its the same tranny as the RS.
