Default What steering rack can go where? forester <-> impreza

I haven't been able to find any decisive evidence about steering rack compatibility, so does anybody know which will fit where? I'm trying to find a new steering rack for my 96 with a complete WRX swap (crossmember, hubs, brakes) and I'm wondering if I can get one out of, say, a forester, or even an earlier Impreza.

Thanks for da help
-Matt

I'm under the impression that the forester and Impreza shared the same steering equipment and that it was different from the WRX, but I'm no expert.

I just took a look at the part numbers, and it's showing the Forester rack as different. I don't know what the difference is, but it is somehow different.

However, for a '96 Impreza, any 90-94 Legacy, any 93-01 Impreza and any '96-01 OBS steering rack would work for you.

I am still trying to sort out if I can use an '02 WRX steering rack with '00 tie rods on my RS, but don't have an answer yet. I have a feeling the only difference is tie rod length for the wider track, but can't confirm anything yet...

Matt- IIRC, when I did my swap, the WRX rack's tie rods were bent, but the old tie ends off the 96 worked fine. I think there's enough thread on the shafts to make up for any difference anyway.

I forgot to mention that my steering column is out of a WRX too, so I guess I'm looking for anything that is WRX compatible. The crossmember is my biggest concern. Can you switch between GC and GD racks/crossmembers?

What would matter is the splining on the rack itself where it enters the U-joint in the engine bay...
