Default 75w90/75w90ns for 97GT??

Hi all,

I did a searh on trans. and rear diff oil and looks like redline 75w90 (3.7quarts) for rear and 75w90ns (0.7quarts) for front for WRX, can I use the same setup for my 97GT?

thx,

etam

First, I think you have your numbers reversed. The transmission/front diff/center diff holds a helluva lot more fluid than the rear diff does.

Second, as you may have seen in your searching, opinions vary widely on which fluids to use. The rear diff is pretty much a no brainer - 75W90 is good to go. Even if you have a rear LSD, it's sealed, so you don't need special fluid.

The tranny is where it gets confusing. Some people have no problems with 75W90, others say that 75W90NS works better, others have had problems with 75W90 and 75W90NS, etc etc. Some guys swear they've used synthetic ATF with no problems, some say Motul synthetic is the way to go, blah blah blah. I tried a couple different brands (one kinda no-name synthetic that was all I could find, and then Redline 75W90, and then I think Mobil1 75W90 too) in my '99's transmission and my 3rd and 4th gear grinding worsened. So, with the '97 I've just stuck with regular Subaru fluid.

I called redline and asked which oil to use. They recommended 75W-90NS for front and 75W-90 for rear.

I used what was recommended and gears started to grin and I was very unhappy about it. I just never get a chance to see how bad it went before the car was totalled.

Now, I am using Mobil 1 75W-90 and time to time 4th to 5th gear will grin. Usually when rev it above 4K. So, maybe stock Subaru ones actually works the best.
