Default What should i be injecting

Hi All,

I am currently planning on getting some sort of injection for my 05 sti. I was curious if i should use water and methanol 50/50 or denatured alcohol and water 50/50 i can get denatured alcohol for about the same price as methanol. Is one better than another?

Please Advise

Best bang for buck is usually water/methanol at about 2 dollars a gallon with great results. It is what I use for daily driving.

Where do you purchase Methanol? I can get denatured alcohol pretty easy but haven't run across Methanol yet.

I am pretty much asking if one is better than the other regarless of price.

Methanol is slightly better and you can usually find it for cheap (3 dollars a gallon). Check your local speed shops and/or local farms.

How is it slightly better, doesn't denatured alcohol have a higher octane?

I believe methanol has an approximate octane rating of 99 while denatured alcohol (ethanol) has a octane rating of 100. I will try to dig up the info on meth vs ethanol when I get a chance. The price alone I would run methanol over denatured alcohol.

I agree about the price, denatured alcohol is $13 a gallon. I thought that I read on here somewhere that denatured alcohol is around 116oct, I'm not sure.

According to this website, Ethanol has an Octane level of 118. (Last Paragraph)

Interesting, I too have been doing some more research and have been finding a couple different values for both. Hopefully I can find a definitive answer at some point.

From my past experiences, methanol is a corrosive beast. Ethanol is still corrosive, but not nearly as severe. Also, as far as drag racing.. ethanol has a better rating as for as consumption VS menthanol. Menthanol is alittle too light and needs a considerable amount of 'weight' to process the same-amount of 'need' for fuel requirements, as ethanol can produce. Let's just say 116 octane gasoline would use at least a 1/4 LESS fuel to produce the same about of power. 116 is, what, $6.00 a gallon........methanol was $1.20 a gallon.. just takes alittle more to produce the same power for the same amount of time as the 116 or other gasoline fuel. (But you start looking into the cooling effect of using alcohol as a fuel, so your intake air temps go down, your engine temp is lower, your detonation level is a lot lower... that is why it's cool to burn alcohol!). Ethanol is slightly better, in consumption per fuel amount required, but a lot better, in the corrosive aspect.
As far as a 50/50 combo w/ water. I like rubbing alcoho (Iso alky) w/ water. Very hard to find Meth or eth or even Race gasoline.
You can go to Sam's Club and by huge bottles of 70% and 90% of Alcohol... so depending on what you choose.. you may be able to use less water.. since this alcohol has a percentage added-in.
W/ my water injection, I just use 40% water and 60% rubbing alcohol, 70%, (from walwart). If I truely needed required fueling needs, I would switch to ethanol... and do a 50/50.

Meth/water is what I'm running. from what I understand from Harman Motive you can tune more agressively with alcohol...more HP's. I've only seen a 25hp increase with meth/water and I understand that you can get around 35-40hp's with a alcohol map. I think...

I will be getting tuned by TurboXS as soon as they release their new map software. Two pump gas maps, two 50/50 methanol/distilled water mix and a 100 methanol map. I will post results when I get them.

A1 Racing in Paterson, NJ carries/sells Sunoco Methanol, as well as their race fuels. Good prices too!

Just out of curiosity, when people say they're injection "alcohol" instead of methanol do they mean they're injecting pure ethanol? Isopropyl alcohol? Denatured alcohol (which is usually cut with methanol)?

Methanol is uber-stable and won't degrade, so long as the bottles are still sealed.

I run 100% denatured alcohol in my setup. I went from 300whp to 340 whp with adding the alcohol. I like using denatured because its easy to find. Its alittle expensive at Home Depot but its convenient and thats all that matters. I only use a gallon every 2-3months so $13 isnt that bad to me and its not like I baby the car. Its been 2 months and Ive been to the track and a dyno session and havnt used an entire gallon yet.
