Default '06 Engine swap into 1998 Impreza

I do hope that this is the right place to post this as other wise I might seem a bit silly.

I've recently bought a 1998 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS. The Engine was locked up, but it had quite a few extras and I got it at what seemed to be a steal. After I started pulling it apart, I found that the previous owner had cracked the block, and thus my question.

I've found a new engine on ebay. From talking to the man, he said that it was out of a 2006 Impreza 2.5RS. What I need to know is if it will fit in my '98. Also, what additional parts will I need to fit it in? He said that it doesn't include the wiring harness, ECU, and exhaust. So other than that, what will I need?

Thanks for the time.

don't even waste your time, a 2006 2.5 engine out of an RS will NOT work in your car. You'd be better off doing a WRX motor swap from a 02-03 WRX or a JDM swap provided the area you live in doesn't have emission testing

You should be able to find the appropriate shortblock for that car fairly easily. Expect to pay $200-400 for a good used one, and $100-150 for a buildable core...

i think i know of the engine you speak on ebay being sold by gruppe-s

you could probblay use the short block from it but its not worth the $1000 they want for it

I say, save up for a wrx swap. If you're lucky, you can find a 04 or 05 USDM sti engine for $3800-5000 shipped. But with that money, you can have a whole WRX swap.

Alright then. I'm glad that I got the answers before making a descision.

I'm actually going to be selling my current car to pay for the engine and some other work that it'll need.

How easy will it be to get a WRX engine in? Will it just drop right in?

Engine? Sure, drops right in. It's the wiring and what not that's a challenge. It's a 150+ hour job for a first timer...
