Default What is the black paint the comes on stock mufflers?

Some Subarus have it, some don't. The rear area of the can where the outlet meets is sometimes painted from the factory black. It flakes off extremely easily, making things look pretty ugly from behind.

What kind of paint is this and what is it's purpose? It looks like underneith the finish is the same as the rest of the muffler so I don't think it is providing any rust protection. If that is its purpose it does a poor job at it.

Think I might try to remove it with a brillo pad.

maybe its just exhaust dust? Mine's shiny and silver, but after driving for a few weeks, the bottom of the exhaust starts accumulating this black dust, so I just wash it extra well.

I'm positive it is a type of paint. It flakes off in chunks just like it.

I think 04 STi's had none, 05's did. I got my 05 with it flaking off at only 18,000 miles. I sanded and resprayed with similar stuff as above and it looks good as new.

i believe it started with 05's, i think it accentuates the polished tip.

My 02 can was painted black, but only on the back end plate where the tailpipes are; and then it was only painted 2/3 up to the top. When I did my OEM hack project, I painted the whole unit with brush on stove paint.

The stove paint is holding very well thus far.
