Default Vana-Gone? Vana-fixable? Or Vana-Dead?

My Subaru 2.2 Vanagon has a blown head gasket, most likely. Today it began steaming, moisture in liquid and gas form comes out of the exhaust pipe, and it runs hot. It might not be a head gasket, but at this point it seems like that would be the case.

When it starts up, it sort of sputters and sounds in a way like it's drowning. It isn't antifreeze that is coming out, most likely, because it dries on the ground quickly.

Am I screwed?

If so, I can get a "new" Legacy 2.2 with 90,000 miles from the junkyard for $500.

A HG for that engine is $35. It should be a pretty straightforward repair as long as you didn't super overheat it...
