man... i still can't believe how similar they look to subarus..

Does everyone know what a Mazda Protege is ?? An Impreza/WRX copy....

everytime I see one, i think 'There's another person that wants a Subaru, but can't afford one.....'

Hmmm ... I think that's the wrong attitude ... when you start to look at the world in terms of "who can afford what" -- well then clearly we should all give up this game, since the Euro guys had us beat from the start....

IMHO the Proteges are really nice looking cars (except for that rear end on the sedan maybe). Honestly, what first attracted you to the Subaru? Boxer engine, 4WD, sure ... but I think the vast majority of us saw a funky jellybean looking thing go by and it piqued our curiosity...

In any case they will never have the 4WD symmetric drivetrain or WRC connection that we do, but that doesn't mean they can't start a cool community of enthusiasts. Judging from the pics, it looks like that ball is already rolling....

I think it totally shows how people are attracted by the look rather than the functionality of the car. From a function point of view, my previous 98 Impreza wagon had 137hp and AWD selling for less than $20,000, it beats the Portege 5.

And I agree that the Portege 5 is a copy of Impreza. What's up with the big fog lights? The Portege 5 is neither a rally car nor does it have off road ability, it's just a wannabe.

But sadly that's what the market is like. Just look at how many SUVs out there, do they really go off road? 90% of them never. They just want the look. To look a the good side, at least the Portege 5's are not as tall as those stupid SUVs, so they don't block our view as badly.

It looks nice. I'm sure that's what most of those people bought it for anyway...because the car looks nice..and there's nothing wrong with that.

IMO, on the most basic level, when we are paying so much money to buy something, and it's something we'll depend our lives on, then we should consider functionality more then the look.

On a second level, the thing u wear, the car u drive, and the books u read represent what kind of person u are. Buying an Impreza may show that you are interested in rallying, or you like the active safty of AWD, or you like a high performance practical car, or you just like the look. But if you buy a Portege 5, it only shows that you are concerned about the look rather than the function of the car. Because if you are more concerned about the function, you would have bought a 2.5TS wagon. That's just my opinion.

the protege 5 and mp3 has made me lose a lot of respect for mazda.
i don't blame people for buying that car, cos a lot of people out there don't know the slightest thing about cars and how they work.
but i do blame mazda for MAKING such a car. just what were they thinking when they decided to make this car???

well...when i first encountered that pg with all the proteges i was like what the....and thats just at the meet there are tons out there on the road still......and ever since they came out with the protege5 and mp3....mazda has lost a potential future buyer...
thats just my 2 cents

ps....do you think if subaru put as much money in to make commercials for the TS,RS there would be more subarus out there on the road today?

i just read the thread on revscene and realized that the mp3 only comes in "laser blue" ....
hmm... since they're gonna go that far, why not just call it "world rally blue" then?
and BC only gets 15 mp3s? i can swear i counted more than that in the lot across from silvercity riverport. but that's ok, wouldn't want too many of those on the streets cos they're just gonna get riced anyway.

Not all of those cars go to BC. Some of them go to other Provinces as well.

Personally I think it's nice to have a Protege Club. What's wrong when someone buy a Protege 5.............

What's wrong with the funtion of that car? A nice 5 -door wagon with a good look. The price tag is not too high. Enough room for five and luggage. Good on gas. A good pratical everyday car.

What's wrong when people is concerned with look? How many 2.5RS you see on the road have a V5 bumper or aftermarket spoiler? What's wrong with that too? I don't feel anything bad when people is concerned with look.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong for having a P5, I was also thinking to get one. But I love the boxer engine and AWD, so I chose the TS wagon.
I even ask if they are interested to have a joint meet with us, we have our own club because we love our cars, nothing wrong, right?

I got a friend that actually picking between the Protege 5 and the TS Wagon (on my recommendation) and he's leaning towards the P5; the fact that the new Impreza doesn't have a sunroof option really hurts it. Also, Mazda has that post-secondary Graduate program where they knock off a several hundred on any price you can negotiate.

You gotta give credit to Mazda for it's huge advertising campaign and the Protege's head-turning looks. I think most people are probably ignorant to the existence of the 2.5TS.

It seems like the Protege is going to the "new Civic" because you see them EVERYWHERE.

Default whatever!

to each is their own, right!
I think Necro is totally right, once you start judging peoples car on what they can afford, the game is over. We are all people who love cars, eh!

I just can't wait to see an MP3 with a V5 spoiler knockoff and some gold wheels. and oooh oooh on with a hoodscoop too </sarcasm>

Default that's nothing new...

car clubs have been starting up ever since the first car was made! Do you think we're the first and only (import) car club in Vancouver?!?!? I'm glad that there are other people who are just as passionate about their vehicles as we are about ours.

We may not think ourselves as "rycers", but sorry to say we've got just as much as "ryce" as any other car club here in Vancouver, and I include myself in that group.

Let's not start any animocity (sp?) between other groups just because they don't own a "subaru" or whatever.

We've been very VERY VERY fortunate to be invited to other clubs' functions (such as VCMC and UBCSCC), because we don't have an "us-against-them" attitude towards them. Heck, if the Protoge club had an auto-x day, and they invited us to go, who would NOT go?!?! I certainly would go and join them!

LaterZ!
Darren!!

What on your car is r!ce Penphoe?

Guys...here's the final word.

The Protege, P5, MP3 are perfectly fine cars. They are functional. What part about the cars make them none functional? Last I checked, they all had an engine, 4 wheels, seats, brakes, it gets people from point A to point B. It's functional. I think a lot of you people here are just upset because Mazda covertly "copied" the stylings of our beloved Impreza and people are so into it. Big deal. I rather them buy the Proteges than Imprezas...makes me more unique. And last time I checked, I bought my GC8 because of looks...heck if I wanted a fast car I would've got a SVT Contour or a Prelude.

And yes, the judging others by what car they drive due to their financial circumstances....that's just wrong. Poorer people need to get around too y'know. Heck...I think I'm pretty cool for driving a GC8...but one of my friends drives a brand new 330ci. I feel pretty outclassed there. And you know what? Another friend of mine is so rich when he was here in Canada he rented luxury cars every so often just cause he felt like it. Money is just that, money. If I had that much disposable cash, believe you me, I wouldn't be driving a Subaru.

That is all. Stop the hatin'.
