Thanks for the info. I wasn't calling you guys liars, just trying to get all the info. Good to know. Bummer. I was under the impression I could swap out the glass and bumpers and pass DOT inspections. Rats!

I'd be getting a compact diesel if I were you.

$10/liter for 98 benzin is not uncommon at the Shell stations.

I'm military, so I get sheltered from that to some extent.

When I lived in Germany I noticed an interesting type of used car called the jahreswagen. Apparently workers at automobile plants in Germany can buy one of their products at a deep discount, but have to hold on to them for at least 1 year before they can sell them. These cars frequently still have protective plastic all over the interior when they come on the market. Something to think about if you're interested in a nearly new Audi, BMW, Ford, Merecedes, Opel, Porsche, VW.

If a particular model and year vehicle has been previously imported and converted and the DOT has the list of things that must be modified, then you can follow the same list. But, those mods must be performed by someone certified to make them, in this country, at dockside, before you take possession. The cost of the mods will be at least $15k.

This is a lot more viable an idea if you wish to buy a Mercedes. You can save some nice change buying a Merc over there and shipping it back. There's a highly established network of importers who do the work and it's way cheaper than doing it to any Japanese car.

Great input folks. Thanks. So, I've today ruled out my original lustful idea. I'll stick with USDM stuff I guess!

Make sure you drive through the Black Forest area. Beautiful twisties for a fun drive (just don't get to carried away, and be safe). I wish I had my WRX when I was there on vacation.

See if you can get on that famous track there in Germany (Nurburgring) and then tell us all about it. Someone on this forum already has done that but the more the marrier.

If its the powertrain you want - and you get super-discounted, and sometimes FREE shipping through the military - why not just score the powertrain goodies for a swap into a USDM car when you get back?

If you are looking for something German (ie. Mercedes, BMW, etc) than they have dealerships not far from Ramstein that cater towards military. You can buy US spec versions of there cars for the european price, which is sometimes ~$10,000 less. As far as taxes go, you don't have to pay any taxes as long as you get the proper paperwork. However you will have to pay customs fees when you bring it back to the states. Usually this is still a lot cheaper than what taxes would be.

first off, pm me on more details about what u are going there for... military service, contractor... etc...

also, if you are allowed to ship your household goods/car, you may be able to take your sti over there... be sure to retain all your stock parts as the inspectors in europe dont take lightly to decatted exhausts and modified parts... hit me up if you want detailed info.

Get in touch with folks on http://www.impreza-gt-club.de/ Its the main German subaru board. I'm pseudo active on that board. If you need any tuning done to your subarus contact markus at http://www.ak-motorsport.de/ You can tell him I sent you. contact Todd Stratton on this board. He can show you the Ring ropes.

25k will get you something decent used. No GC STi's out in Germany. You can get one of Bug eyed prodrived spec STi's. Nice. any new STi is around 50k. Let's you appreciate how cheap things are here.

And when on the autobahn:

1. Always signal
2. observe lane discipline (only pass on the left, otherwise stay in the right lane)
3. never pass on the right (illegal and people can and do right down your plate and send it in)
4. always check your mirrors. be very vigilant about traffic coming up on your ass.
5. Observe the speed limit (only go balls out in the derestricted areas)
6. Explore the countryside and other cities and embrace a different culture
7. Learn the language and don't be an ugly american (there's a reason people hate us!)

BTW, markus' GroupA rally car is for sale!

Get a mid 80's Audi Quattro. Or buy a Peugot or a Citroen and bring it here. Ohhh! Better yet!! Try and find one of those crazy turbo Renaults from the 80's!! You know... the boxy kind. I forget the name.
