Post air-box thingy-ma-jig

Being relatively new to sooby land I have a question regarding the air intake system. I Just put in a new Amsoil panel filter and in the process I accidently removed my silencer box under in the front fender... well it wasn't an accident. Anyway what is that big ol black box thingy that is between the MAS and the intake manifold? This is on the '97 DOHC engine. Is this a necessary piece of plastic or one of those silly "optional" parts that can be parted ways with?

I imagine it has the same effect of removing it on NA as turbos - but on the turbo the box just quietens down the intake roar

Remove it - put in a cold air intake instead - you'll get a bit more noise under WOT and you'll lose a bit of excess weight at the same time - you might gain a tiny bit of power at the top end

A lot of people have commented on this before- I think the Sport Compact Car issue on custom intakes talked about it too- most intakes replace all the piping betw. the MAF and the throttle body, including the black box thingy.
However SCC found that removal of the black box created turbulence in the throttle body airflow at higher rpm that screwed up the ECU and actually REDUCED horsepower by causing the engine to run lean. W/o a dyno, you probably wouldn't be able to tell- but if you can find a cold air intake that keeps the box in, that's better. I think the black box actually extends the throttle body's plenum air volume which is a good thing, b/c the 2.5 engine has a small volume plenum. The box is pretty empty w/o any restrictive bends inside, so I would leave it there.

Well, since you have a 97 DOHC setup, you have the more ROBUST MAF (hot wire, where the 99 is hot film). I have a 99 2.5GT sedan, but the motor is the same exact DOHC in my brothers 98 2.5RS.

I have a Weapon-R intake on my car, and the intake is actually LOUDER than my 2.5" exhaust when I got WOT above 4K rpms. It's a very unique sound, very throaty. I think it sounds mean. It won't be mistaken for any 1.6L Honda engine anytime soon

My brother has had the Minnam Stage 2 on for almost a year, and I have used the Weapon-R for a few months. No MAF issues. So don't sweat that.

Does it make extra power? Hard to tell for me...my Legacy feels like such a turd after driving my modded 90 Laser RS turbo regardless of intake or not
