top carrier
Any one have a top carrier for their Wagon? I am planning a family trip to Toronto and would love the extra space those carries look to provide. I believe that SOOB has one but I think that it is just made my THule. What kind of "on-line" prices are out there for these things. Yes I do have the factory roof rack and cross bars.
Thanks TIm

Hey Tim,
I've had one of these Thule Summit box for about a year and a half, and paid $259 w/ locks and tax. Mainly used for snowboarding. They're great for stowing gear. Any of these rooftop boxes will fit on your stock racks/crossbars, the only limitation is the amount of wieght you can load... and sometimes clearance issues w/ the hatch. I went with thule, as they're a bit cheaper than Yakima, and a LOT cheaper than Packasport. The new models are more aerodynamic, and can open to either side, rahter than just passenger. For the 10cubic foot range, you'll spend about 200-250 bones... don't forget locks. REI sells theirs on their website. Have fun on your travels there Chief. These folks carry most of the popular stuff, for comparison. The PackaSport is a beautiful piece of work, but you get's what you pay for! http://www.gearonthego.com/index.html

Glen, thanks for that link but shipping on a box is around $70-OUCH. Thanks all for the info. How much would a rectangular box, like the one pictured effect the gas millage of the car? Any side effects from people that have used them on their cars, ie handleing, tippy, boxes leaks etc.
Thanks again. TIm |

I have one of these Kanga Pouches:
<IMG SRC="http://www.azscooby.com/members/peat/outbackpack.jpg" border=0> I see that LLBean has a smaller version on sale in their sale section of their web site. Mine works really well. I've gone through some heavy storms and everything stays dry. Plus it's very easy to store when you aren't using it. I have more details if needed just e-mail me direct. Peaty AZScooby.com |

Legacy sti L,
Hi There, here's the unabridged version. Tippines, non existent. You can't even feel the box on top of the car, and in the photo above, we had that sucker loaded to the hilt. Fuel economy is affected, don't kid yourself, I'd say you get about 10% - 15% less fuel economy depending on how you drive. But it's still better than driving a big SUV. No leaks, through snow storms, hail storms, and torrentian downpours. No significant difference in handling. Oh on a curious note though, when I towed a U-Haul 9 foot trailer, I got great fuel economy, better than with the box carrier. Hope this helps...
