Question Legacy GT/ Rear Sway Bar

Hello all, I'm new here so bear with me! I just got a 98 Legacy GT 5 spd (woo-hoo!), and was curious about the rear sway bar. Obviously that's one of the first upgrades to think about, but I wanted to make sure that the GT didn't already have an 18mm sway bar before I bought a new one for it. Does anybody here have any comments or opinions about this? Thanks!

Richeich,

the OEM Sway bar on a '98 Legacy GT is not 18mm (much to our disapointment! ). However this is easily remedied byt purchasing one: 18mm,20,21mm depending on your preference. Try Spdtuning.com , Spomotorsports.com , home.att.net/~teaguesauto/index.htm for parts that'll fit our cars. (i have a '99 Gt Ltd.) Good luck and let us how that sway bar turns out!

Thumbs up

also, since you have a OB you can compare sizes and even borrow the bigger bar from there to try on your GT...

Knowing that you can just run down to your local (discount parts?) dealer and order
the OB bar and bushings...

I measured my stock one before I ordered an 18mm just to make sure I actually needed the new bar. It looked to me that the stock one is 15mm. I have heard that the Outbacks use an 18mm bar, so you could check that.

To measure it I just wrapped a strip of paper around the bar nice and tight and marked where the paper overlapped the loose end of the strip. Then I measured that distance to get the circumference of the bar, then divided by 3.1415289 (aka pi - and I regurgitated those numbers from memory, so they could be wrong, but 3.14 is good) to get the diameter. If you have a cloth tape measure (like a tailor uses) you could use that to do the same technique.

Anyway, if you do have a 15mm bar, upgrade it to a bigger bar. You will be happy with the performance improvement, trust me.

try the easy way to measure, use an open wrench! If 17 is to small and 19 is to big it must be 18! Most home sets don't come with a 18mm wrench.

I don't suppose it's of any use but the GTB have 19/18 f/r anti-roll bars - think the same as the outback
