Default 2.5 DOHC heads to 2.2 SOHC heads swap questions.

so i've got a '98 legacy GT with the dohc 2.5 in it. i'd like to use the heads to build up a budget sti engine for another car, and at the same time swap in sohc 2.2 heads to the GT so that i'm left with a high compression motor. i'll probably end up getting the heads and intake manifold from a early-mid 90's impreza or legacy to do this.
what will i need to do in the way or wiring or other parts? i'd like to have it be as simple as possible since this is my daily driver and i cant have it out of commission for long at all.

You'll just need to make sure that you get an Ej22 manifold that has the IAC on the manifold like the GT does. Then, used the GT manifold wiring harness, TB, and coil and you should be good to go. If at all possible, get an early Ej22 manifold and avoid the EGR. I have a spare manifold sitting around if you need one as this goes forward. I may also have a set of EJ22 dual port heads in fairly short order...

my dohc heads have the EGR, why should i get one that doesnt have that? i thought removing the egr would introdice some knock into the system , not to mention throw a cel.

EGR is a BS emissions thing, deleting it impacts nothing...

just get a 98 ej22 ecu and injectors and use phase II ej22 heads (worse flow then phase I dual port heads, but have better cam) I did the exact oposite of you, swapped out my 98 ej22 for an ej25, just required a 98 2.5 ecu to use the ej25. ej22/ej25 hybrid is like 13.5:1 compression iirc. You should use your stock ej25 phaseII block to make an "open deck ej257" shortblock (ej257 crank, rods, pistons) i believe, its a subaru so you have a million options

I'm doing a phase I 2.5L shortblock swap into my '99 EJ22 using the phase II 1 layer headgaskets. What am I to look out for?

except your cruising speed EGT's

EGR Valves reduce the NOx emissions by allowing inert gas into the combustion chamber under light engine loads when cruising.
