Default Western PA / Northern WV dealerships

Well, I decided to ugrade from my Ford Aspire (rebadged KIA) which has served me well for six years. I bought my WRX in August FYI, in case that makes a difference to any of you... I've often heard August is one of the best months to buy a car, although that may just be an old wise tale.

I checked out three dealerships (in depth) when shopping for my WRX. The first I'll talk about is Falconis in western PA, just south of Pittsburgh. I was dissatisfied with their service and sales reps. They gave me the old "these are so rare" and "we won't go lower than $500 over MSRP" speech multiple times, even when I told them I had a $20,000 down payment. They wern't very helpful, didn't know much about Subarus (dealt in Dodges mostly), and were not wiling to do a dealer trade so I could find a blue 5 speed

The next dealership I'll cover is John Howard's Subaru in Morgantown WV, which is just across the WV-PA border. Basically they sale cars to college kids (WVU), so if you are under 30 years old, they try to stick one up your arse. The guy I talked to basically ignored me when I started to ask about the WRX, with a "you don't have the money to buy one anyway so quit bothering me look." The look on his face when I told him I had a $20,000 down payment was priceless He seemed kind of offended when I asked him to go work out his best no haggle no trade price, I guess car dealers don't like having the pressure be put on them
Eventually what turned me off from their dealership was the salesman's lies and bad attitude. When I asked him to go work out a price he wanted to know "Are you shopping for a car or a price?" He complained that comparing the price his dealership gives to other dealerships is unfair. I spent about 20 seconds explaining to him how the free market works, and the purpose of competition, but he still seemed offended. Then he tried to high-pressure me with the "If I beat thier price by $500 will you buy this car RIGHT NOW?!?"
The final straw was the dual pinstripes the dealer put on all his WRXs. Think dual gray pinstripe, 80's cavalier style... I asked him why they put those on there, and if they would be willing to remove them. He swore to me that Subaru had put them on. After explaining to him that I have looked at dozens of other WRXs, talked to a person who works for Subaru, and looked at tons of pictures off of the Subaru website, and never saw pinstripes; he still insisted that "They came in that way."
Well, I never give liars my business when possible, so I left.

The final and best dealership I dealt with was Bortz Subaru in Waynesburg PA (southwest PA). They didn't want to talk to me at first either (I guess eveyone assumes a 22 year old can't possibly afford a WRX ), but once they found out more about how old I was/where I work they seemed accomodating.
They asked me if I wanted to take it for a test drive, and let me run it aorund for five or so miles, so that was cool. They were really willing to do dealer trades, and didn't have many problems finding a blue 5 speed WRX. Further along in the dealings they were pretty nice. They didn't try to sell me an undercoating or anything like that, and more importantly, they didn't insult my intelligence. Overall this is the best dealership I could find in the area. I eventually got my WRX for $22,800, which was about $200 over invoice. So basically I probably paid about $1200 markup, but that's OK. MSRP on my WRX was $25,300 I believe. I got a 2002 WR blue 5 speed WRX. No options except the auto-dimming mirror w/ compass and upgraded security system.

Hope I could help someone. Just reply or email me if there is anything else you need to know that I missed.

I have had excellent service from Langston Subaru (formerly Bianchi Subaru) in the east suburbs of Pittsburgh in Monroeville. I have purchased three Subaru's from them in the past three years and have gotten excellent service and no haggle prices. Their service was a little limited previously due to a small garage area, but they have moved to a new, much bigger and nicer location earlier this month.
They carry a limited amount of SOA and after market speed and custom items for Impreza's. Hopefully they will stock more of these items. They are also involved in rally racing and have a yellow WRX. If you are considering buying a new Subie, give them a try. Their service manager has been working there since the first Subaru was sold there in the early 70's, so they have a lot of Subaru experience.

Gravedigging a thread here.

I am in Morgantown, WV and am shopping for a new WRX right now.

I have had 3 separate bad experiences with John Howard, I think I would by an Evo ( ) before I bought a car there. Does anyone *know* someone reputable up there?

Otherwise, any new, good experiences with SW Pennsylvania/Northern WV dealerships? I've heard good things about Bortz, and I was going to check out Larry Myers (?) in Fairmont.

Thanks everyone!

John Howard:
a) Told me the ~$1000 markup on the cars was non-negotiable
b) Told me that they weren't letting any STi's out for test drives because "people are buying them without one" (not me, bub)
c) Acted generally "Car-dealer" sleazy - no testdrives without running a credit check, lying about my credit score etc.

Thanks everyone!
Call Condrin Subaru in Altoona PA. They gave me the royal treatment when I was trading in my wrecked (I got rearended after being stopped in traffic for about ten seconds) 2002 WRX for a 2004 STi. Ask to speak with Telly if he still works there, he is awesome and will will probably give you the best deal out of all dealers in the area.

Condrin Subaru in Altoona: 800-228-3428

Budd Baer in Washington also gave me a very good offer on a 2004 STi, and was within $500 of Condrin's offer.

Altoona is about 2hrs away from Morgantown, but the drive is worth it considering how much money you'll save. Avoid the small-minded dealers in and around Morgantown. The local dealers are petty and would rather make $2500 profit on one car as opposed to $500 profit on six cars, that's why they are small time dealers. Bortz is OK, but they don't compare to Condrin or Budd Baer.

A lot of people recommend Van Bortel in New York. While there new car prices are good, they will severely low-ball your trade in if you have one. When trading in my 2002 WRX for the 2004 STi Van Bortel was a good $2000 above Condrin and Bud Baer.

And if you ever want to trade up for a car, it helps if the car is wrecked When my 2002 WRX got hit, the repair bill was about $8000. In real money, it probably cost the dealership around half of that to fix the car; so, you have an extra $4000 in bargaining power if you're trading in a wrecked car with an $8000 check rather than simply a fixed car that has had $8000 in repairs done to it. I ended up going from a 2-year old 2002 WRX with 40,000 miles to a brand new 2004 STi for under $15,000, which isn't bad considering the difference in the MSRP of both cars with 0-miles was $10,000 One note of caution with the STi, watch out for the cost of consumable, Gas, tires, brakes pads, and wheels will kill your wallet.

If you're interested in becoming a member of our Morgantown Subaru group and going to autocrosses with us, send me or Quentin Berg a PM. Also feel free to PM me if you need any further information.
