Hey guys,
First my setup: td06h-20g UTEC PE 850s Spearco TMIC Perrin EBCS TXS stealthback Prodrive axleback and all other supporting mods My perdicament. Had my car tuned down at TurboXS by Nathan and Jermaine in august of last year and they did a great job. I put down 335whp and same torque at 21 psi tapering to 19psi although i don't run that map often at all. Daily i run on the #2 conservative map of about 19psi tapering to 18psi. Anyway, my boost levels seem a little wacky when in certain driving situations. When i romp from a stop or from a roll in first gear the boost hits target nicely in all gears. However, when i give some good throttle in say 4th or 5th gear when cruising the boost spikes to 1.6 bar and tapers to 1.5 and stays there on the conservative map. Now, the boost doesn't creep at all, it just hits that level and is stuck there nicely. It seems nice but it is easy to get the CEL to flash in this particular situation so i've laid off of rolling on full throttle in high gears which, to say the least, is irritating as all hell especially for a daily driver and more importantly, cruising down the main straights of my favorite tracks. Unfortunately i do not have a laptop otherwise i would lower the values myself in the boost map, but is that really the problem? What exactly is causing this? Now i'm not sure if this has to do with the UTEC controling boost or with particular weather conditions, but this weekend AZScoobie (Clark Turner) is going to be coming to NY to tune a group of subaru's; mine included. I'm adding a K&N typhoon, race pipe, Greddy EVO2 3" catback, and 1 step colder plugs to be tuned into the mix by Clark. I've been thinking about adding a seperate EBC in the Greddy ProfecB TypeS for its simplicity and to possibly cure my boost issue. My question is, will the TypeS and UTEC, tuned by Clark, rid me of this issue? It also seems great for adjusting easily and quickly for severe drops in temperatue. Let me know if you think i should get the Greddy to control boost opposed to the UTEC and if this will keep boost more under control. Unfortunately i don't have any logs for you guys because i don't have access to a laptop at the moment otherwise that would be the first thing i would post up. Thanks in advance for any help, Tom

If you have boost spikes then you should try to adjust the boost gain on the utec, if you can get your hands on a laptop.
Saying that, I bought a blitz ebc off ebay and never looked back. I had all kinds of problems trying to get boost just right and I wanted some adjustibility with changing weather conditions. The only problem you may or may not see is too much boost building on light throttle before the fuel crossover point. But since its set at 25% throttle it takes effort to boost to the point where you'll get knock. So I'd say go ahead and get it. Its cheaper than buying a laptop and not as hard to lug around when you want to play with boost. Unless you gotta a nice friend who has a laptop. Last edited by beauhawk; 03-30-2006 at 03:41 PM. |

Hey Tom, I couldn't answer you post over at wrxhackers as it looks like its down.
Anyway if you are having boost spiking issues I would 1. Remove the ABC altogether and make sure you use the stock restictor pill hose going from the wastegate to the T piece. This is what I did over the weekend and I am getting more consistent boost. Like I said the ABC is just too sensitive to varying weather. 2. Install you Profec B and let this control boost while UTEC does fuel and timing. I assume the Profec B comes with a much better solenoid which will give you are more consistent levels without spiking. For me I am very happy using the restrictor pill and doing away with the ABC. Let us know how you get on with the tune. |

Is your perrin ebcs setup in interrupt mode? See my old thread: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=782100 After chatting up Jerry about the size vaccum lines I should be running I realized I needed to toss out the tiny ones perrin provides: ![]() I've since ditched one of the right angle connectors for a straight through: ![]() |

If he has the perrin ebcs setup correctly he doesnt have a ABC, stock hose, or restrictor pill. |

[quote=AaronWRX]NO NO NO! This is the opposite of what he needs to do. He should be increasing the gain!
-Edited- My fault, I was thinking standard boost controllers. |

And yes a higher booost gain setting reduces the chance of spiking and this is what I suggested to Tom over at wrxhackers also. What is the reason the Perrin EBCS is giving varying boost levels if it is a high quality 3 port boost solenoid? |

I do not have the restrictor pill, stock vacuum lines or ABC on the car. They are bigger lines(don't remember what size), and the EBCS is setup in interrupt mode.
Turns out that the wastegate on my 20g is insufficient for the exhaust setup i had installed on the car. It's a mechanical problem that needs to be fixed. Check my thread here for more information: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=969603 Aaron, very interesting. I'm going to have to check out that thread immediately. |

aaronwrx great pictures and info regarding the Perrin connections being too small. I'm going to head out and grab the larger connections and hoses. Would you mind posting closeups of the Perrin install with upgraded hoses etc.
gills I hope you sort out the wastegate issues. And yes I did realise your not using the ABC but thought you may of had the restrictor pill. Anyway let us know of the final figure once sorted. |
