Default what does it take to be an IT recruiter besides a pulse?

i just got a call from a recruiter. she asked me what kind of company my current employer is. now, i know my current employer isn't as visible as, say, accenture or ibm, but it's a pretty big gun in the it services realm.

C'mon, Somebody Could know who i'm talking about.

shouldn't this person at least know who the players in the industry are?

"Uh, well... we're a 50yo company with 40k+ employees worldwide focusing on all things IT related. Oh, and we dabble in outsourcing."

Yeah, I don't know how you answer that.

Interesting, we just had a "big and very important" meeting with CSC two days ago. I think they have some sort of partnership that they're starting w/us.

But honestly, I couldn't name the "Big xx" or any major consulting company until I started interacting with them. The reason being that I couldn't care less about companies for which I don't work. It's kind of like knowing about celebrities and such, why bother?

Not a fair comparison. Don't you think you shoud probably know the big names in your field regardless if you work for them or not? Sooner or later your bound to intereact with people that have worked for/with them.

I do know the big names now, any recruitor should. I'm agreeing with his post. Whenever I get a potential candidate whom works for an unfamiliar company, I simply view the website of their company if I need info.

I was talking about prior to recruiting, I couldn't care less about any other companies unless I have business with them.

all you'd have to do to be "exposed" to other firms is read a couple of white papers. seriously. it's not like people are out blogging "OMG accenture r a-holes CSC rulz."

why bother? it's called product and marketplace knowledge. i want to know who else is partnered with my tool providers, who can't get to technology that i can get to, and how to leverage my firm into a position to win work. i want to know if their rates are based on putting helpdesks in asia, i want to know if they have more H1s than citizens.

know your enemy.
