Default JDM EJ205 LGT in a 02 WRX

If this is in the wrong forum, please forgive.

Hello all,

My motor quit at a really bad time and I need to get it replaced. I have been looking around for an ej207, but scarcity and price are keeping me away. So I found this jdm ej205 off a legacy from gruppe-s. The price of the engine ($2000)is cheaper than what I have been quoted for a USDM used motor ($2500). It has AVCS and mildly more aggressive cams, but other than that, supposedly identical to the USDM engine. My question is, should I bother? I went in for some upgrades. It was supposed to have VF30, injectors, no cats from motor back, STI RA gearset, and turbo inlet pipe. I may want more later on, thus the decision for the RA gearset. Ran a compression test and found out the bad news. My motor quit on me at a very bad time financially. Budget is a main concern, but I am almost willing to sell a kidney to do the right thing for my car. I would, of course, get the jdm ecu to run avcs and I would have to change my EMS for I am currently running Cobb. So the price of the engine, plus jdm ecu, plus AVCS adapter harness, plus utec or ecutek, plus tuning for california gas, plus labor = 1 less adrenal gland (why do I even bother?) I trust my mechanic more than I trust my doctor, but he is hesitant on using a jdm motor and ecu. Once he sees the motor and ecu, his doubts should be cleared, right? It is my understanding that a jdm ej205, jdm ecu and avcs adapter harness will be 100% plug and play. Not just 100% compatible, but 100% the same mechanically meaning he can look something up in mitchell and it will be the same? I hope so, otherwise I will have to add towing costs to go to another shop as well as pay double in labor because he really hooks me up. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Need to make a decision by Tuesday because my car is just hollow right now and taking up space at my mechanic's. Sorry about the long post.

-Danny

forgot to add...the sti ver.7 jdm ecu should work for a standard jdm motor(ej205) (since I am getting it re-tuned), right? I am hoping it will at least start and let me limp around for a few miles to a tuner or at least let my mechanic know that the combo is indeed working. Lastly, how much should I be expecting, if any, for my old motor? Cylinder 1 may have scorched cylinder walls as well as bent valves and Cylinder 4 has bad rings. Total miles is 116,XXXK miles. Or...passenger side kidney(LHD)...only 5 years of binge drinking during college, low miles...

This might belong in the 2.0L discussion, but my motor just went recently, and I'm opting for a new shortblock (~$1500) if needed instead of the same motor you're talking about.

It's only because both the heads and shortblock are going that I feel the need to change the entire engine. If it was just the typical piston ring problem, I would have bought a 2.5L short block already. Sucks.

I put in a jdm sti V8 motor, ej207. It was "basically" plug and play. I used a jdm sti v8 ecu and wired up the avcs and that was it. Good luck!
