PDXTuning has already done several of these. I'm sure they have a map for your set-up.

You won't be disappointed.

I picked up a used VF39 and a used STI TMIC for $650. I'm running the map Cobb designed to support these mods, and this thing flat out rips. I made the mistake of not reading the notes and didn't realize the restictor pill needed to be bored out.

In 1st and 2nd gear, I had no problems. WOT in 3rd gear (also happened in 5th gear), I threw a cel and my cruise control light began to blink. I'm guessing their was too much pressure built up and the throttle cut out so that further damage would be prevented. After the engine "checked itself", everything went back to normal - I was still within the expected boost range. However, everytime I got on it in 3rd gear, it would cut out. After drilling out the restrictor pill, I was able to drive it hard w/o the CEL coming on or the engine cutting out.

I wasn't able to find a #57 drill bit, which is what Cobb specs, but I was able to get a 3/64 Dremel bit. Cobb specs the hole to be .043", 3/64 = .0468. Since the pill is brass, it isn't very hard to drill it out.

the stg. 3 map is in the list with the rest of the maps...and if you open the map notes it will explain the need for and how to re-size the restrictor pill.

Check out the VF39 map.

As for the restrictor pill, Cobb does an excellent job outlining and providing visuals as to what you need to do. You can download the map notes from the same page, it's right under the base and real maps.

I forgot to mention, I have a Cobb catless TBE. I'm not sure if it's necessary, but it's what Cobb specs for this particular map. Actually, they don't specify catless. I figured if I was going...I'm going all the way.

well, i got my restrictor pill, didnt need to drill a hole it was already the right size, put it in, reflashed my ecu. Now , the car just flys, never dies out like the stocker turbo does. ecu is still learning as well. I would recomend this to anyone who has an 06. its a cheap mod, and its as fast as a stage1 sti or even faster, I know cause my friend had one. Thanks cobb for the good work. Now its time to get protuned. 1 month

wow you live in Sarasota! thats my home but i'm currently at college right now in Saint Louis....if it wouldn't be too much trouble the next time i come home (soon) i'd like to take a ride in your car to get a feel for the vf39 so i can decide if i'm gonna go with that or skip it and go for a larger turbo etc.

let me know if that would be cool with you....if it is i'll just shoot you a PM next time i'm home.

When you install a VF39 do you all not upgrade the fuel pump and injectors?
it says I need to for my 05 WRX, but maybe that is just on 02-05's

I already bought them and all, I just hope I didn't waste my money. I'll check the Cobb notes and see what it says. I don't see anything about the pill on the 05 notes.

I have come to believe that for any VF39 swap you really should upgrade the fuel pump and injector(pinks). Needlesstosay; the larger intercooler to accompany the larger turbo.

If you don't upgrade the pump and injectors than I think you run the risk of running lean bc they can't compensate for all the extra air the turbo is pumping through your engine.

Hope this helps.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead (again) but W R O N G.

The 06 WRX has the same sized injectors as the 07 STi.

The 07 STi has top feeds, similar to the STi pinks.

The 06/07 WRX has the same sized top feed injectors.

Show me where the 06 WRX has "larger injectors."

Please?

The 04-06 STis have side feed injectors.

Even so, they are MAXed beyond 275 WHP without a bigger pump.

The pump will only give you very little extra breathing room (approx 10% IDC), and it is better to swap injectors to 740cc, if you have goals of 300WHP or greater.
