Default Tint in Alberta

I live in Ottawa and plan on moving to Edmonton. As far as I know, tint is a no-no in Alberta. How strict is law enforcement about the tint issue? I have 32% all around. When I move to Edmonton, should I pack a box of KY jelly?

Althouhg not completely familiar on this issue, my understanding is that the windshiled and the front driver/passenger windows are off-limits. Everything else is a go.

As Marcus said, anything from the driver forward cannot have any tint, and anything behind the driver can be tinted as dark as you want. As long as your tint isn't too dark the city Police shouldn't bother you about it, unless you have a car that really stands out, is loud, or you drive like a jackass. I'd be a little wary of being out of town, as the RCMP have nothing better to do in alot of areas than harrass you for tint and other stuff.

I can't remember tint %'s but on my Integra i have the lightest shade possible on my side windows, one shade darker on the side-rear windows, and one shade darker than that on the rear window. It doesn't look very dark overall and i've never been pulled over in the city for it. But i did get pulled over by an RCMP coming back from Jasper on the highway who claimed he could tell my side windows were tinted from the side of the road as i drove by at 115 km/h.

I have seen plenty of cars/trucks with tint on the front widows although the tint is usually a bit lighter than the rear windows so it is not as obvious. Having all widows tinted the same will attract more attention from the police, I would think. Still, not as 'visible' as driving like a lunatic would be

Dang! Well other than tint, the car is stock. So besides being a bright white color with a contrast of dark windows (where 32% is the second lightest shade I could get after 35% without buying clear seran wrap), I should be okay. Haha! Better save up for a few tickets then.

I have my Aspen White WRX tinted really dark on the back 3, and one shade lighter on the front 2. No problems in 2 years.
Before that, had a 88 Prelude Si 4WS with dark windows all around...3 years, no problems.

My brother has had dark windows all around on his vehicles for about 12 years now (an 84 Supra and 94 Celica) with no hassles.

I personally know one guy that had to peel his tint from a Tiburon...but he was being pulled over for something else and I think he might have given some attitude to the cop.

Rule of thumb...if i get pulled over, both driver side windows get rolled down before the cop walks up - not because I'm trying to hide it, but because I'm being respectful. Cops don't like walking up and not knowing what's going on in the car. Even if the cop asks "Are you hiding your tint?" I'd say that I did it out of consideration for them That should defuse the situation.

Depending on how old you car is you will have to get an out of province inspection, and when you get the inspection done they will tell you to remove them of it won't pass. I bought my mazda in may and moved to edmonton in august and had to take them off. If I'm not mistaken if your car is more than 3 months old you will need the inspection.
claude.

In my Mustang I got pulled over 3 times in one week for the tint. 6 times total while I had it.
First thing I did when buying the WRX new was tint. In 2 1/2 years I haven't had a problem. If thats not profiling...

I was wondering about the inspection. I wonder if I can find a shop that'll do the inspection and ignore it. It's an 06. They come with the 32% tint all around, right? lol

I had no problems whatsoever with calgary police or cochrane rcmp for over 3 years, but I would also echo the sentiment that bad driving behaviour will most certainly end in your tint being peeled off on the side of the road.

I don't drive like an idiot, so that's a plus. The only thing I'm really worried about is the inspection. If they say I have to peel it off, I won't be too happy.

If you know someone then I'm sure you could get around it. I'll see what I can find out and let you know, and maybe someone might read this and know a shop that would do it for you..

Hmmm. I used someone for an out of province inspection and I couldn't believe how easily he looked past some items. He just looked at me and said "you'll get that fixed right?" and winked. Can't for the life of me remember the name now. It wasn't a shop though. The guy met me in a parking lot and looked the car over! Morgex gave me the number. I'll try to find the #.

Just to echo some others' comments, tint on the rear three windows, any shade goes. Side windows and front window, no tint at all. You can have a tintes sun strip without worries. I have 20% on the rear three, 35% on the two front sides and a tint strip on the front window (at the top) and have been fortunate - no problems with cops. *Knock on wood*

I work for the Hyatt Group in Calgary as a Business Manager so I took the opportunity and talked to our Service Manager about doing Out Of Province Inspections and the issue of window tint. The answer was very clear that no dealership would ever pass a vehicle that did not comply with Alberta’s Road and Safely Act. The dealership, if caught would lose its business license and/or be fined up to 250K. My suggestion…eat the $150.00 and just do your tint again…in a few months you will be over it.

That doesn't seem quite right. Factory tint is not film. Furthermore, I know of very few manufacturers that offer tint on the front windows from the factory.

I believe the issue is based on aftermarket tint only and not tint done at factory level...for it to be done at factory and have it enter the North American market, it would already have to comply to any and all laws...

The new regulations that came in about 3 years ago has stopped this practice. I Hope!!
It's now the shop that is licenced, not the individual.
Remeber the old days before the inspections? The Tempos that fell in half and burst into flames?

Question Are you gonna bring attention to yurself?

So, my son has a "red" sports car.. his windows are tinted 90% except for the windshield. The stereo is louder than anything I have ever experienced.

Well, for some reason (probably because he couldn't hear the seat belt chime) he wasn't wearing the seat belt. He turns a corner and the police that was there giving another guy a ticket pulls him over!

The police quote " It was sooo loud I had to look up to see what was coming!"

He got a seat belt ticket and a $20.00 warning if the tint wasn't removed. He paid the ticket and sent the $20.00 warning by mail. He still has the tint.

If you can pay the fine........ etc.

I was pulled over twice for tint. both times i wasn't driving like an ass.

First incident was on my way back from calgary, pulled over by Innisfall RCMP, not for speeding but b/c of the tint on my windows. The officer said he could tell. he gave me a ticket for $28 bucks and a warning that if i didn't get it taken off, next time i'll have to take it off then and there.

2nd incident i was leaving WEM and was pulled over at a checkstop in november by RCMP! ****...that time i was forced to remove the tint on the roadside. No choice, rip it off, or i'll tow ur vehicle for not meeting highway regulations.
and he gave me another ticket for improper isurance because my slip expired the month prior and i didn't have my new one in the car yet. No break from that guy, DAMNIT! i was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO pissed.

Now i just have tint on the rear windows. I can't be bothered, i don't want to deal with the cops, the less contact i have with them, the better.

It seems that the EPS let most tint slide, HOWEVER the RCMP do not! so it's a crap shoot. if u want to gamble, and u don't mind the hassle. then go for it.

BTW the tint tickets are now MORE then the $28 when i got it. i think it's like $60 or something. i'm not sure.

You are correct, the ticket is now $60. I was pulled over in red deer by our newly implemented Traffic Enforcement division. So they truly have nothing better to do than give out small fines. Since, i have passed at least 10 RCMP's including one checkstop, and i haven't been bothered since.

I have 5% Rear, and 20% on the front four which is about as dark as chevy, gm, and fords factory tint.
