Bjorn Waldegard in 1979 was the first ever drivers champion.

Talking

Bernard Darniche in the Lancia Stratos won the first ever World Rally Championship Rally, the Monte Carlo of 1979 by just six seconds from Bjorn Waldegard in the Escort.

He won this because Bjorn Waldegard had to stop to remove rocks placed in the road by spectators.

This is a bit off topic, but for some reason I'm trying to imagine this happening in Formula 1, and it cracks me up.

"Oh, and Schumacher is climbing out of the Ferrari, he doesn't look happy...."

there's no way Schumi would move the rocks himself. he would have Rubens do it.

Rubens would pick up the rocks and then give everyone the "bird"

OK, so you want the winning driver of the first rally that was part of the World Rally Championship?

1973 Monte Carlo, Jean-Claude Andruet, Renault Alpine A110
