Ok my mom has a 1991 subaru legacy. My brother blew up the motor
. Anyways the car is CLEAN and I can pretty much have it for free but the cosat of the 2.2L motors is kinda high. I was quoted $795 from soshin but they also told me that they have "direct replacement 2.0L motors"I assume that they mean an ej20. Is this really a direct replacement? Will it work with the stock ecu and auto tranny? Any help woud be appreciated. Thanks

If you want a direct replacement, you're going to need the same engine. Swapping in something else, be it some NA 2.0 or a US 2.5, would involve a lot of tweaking and sensor swapping, which can be a headache. $795 isn't that expensive. Places like CCR, who have been doing rebuilds for longer than pretty much anyone, are more expensive, but have actual warranties:
http://www.ccrengines.com/ They would also be able to give you some more detailed info on which engines would drop in, with little to no fuss. |

is that $795 shipped to your door, or $795, you pick it up and haul it away....and where are you located?

$795 plus shipping. I live in Gresham OR. I just dont want to put $800 into it because I just want to drive it for a little while and sell it and make some cash. As for a warranty, I dont know about subie motors but Soshin gives 6 month warranties on SR20s.

If you are finding 800 high for a motor, your only alternative is gonna be a salvage yard, preferrably a u-pull-it salvage yard.

Not quite, I bet he can find a source with small mechanic shops that can get the used Japan motors for around 350 or 450. They come straight from Japan, so they don't have our emissions stuff. you have to use your intake and such, but my mechanic said they are pretty good motors. Sounds like that would solve his prob of drive for a while, and then sell. Just an Idea.
