Question KYB/AGX-To Buy OR Not To Buy!!!

Hello Fellow Legacy Owners,

Just read all of the previous KYG/AGX posted topics, and got nervous.....SOOOO!!!

???If a person already has a rear swaybar(SPD 18mm), Eibach Pro Kit Springs (SPD Lowering Springs), & Cusco Front Strut Tower Bar, what kind of shocks should he or she go with???

Is KYB/AGX GOOD or BAD? Why?
What other shocks are available? Are they GOOD or BAD? Why?
Pricing-Whos got the best deal?
BIG ???-If anyone can solve this problem, he or she is a life saver...after installing the springs, I got a four wheel alignment...Approximately 6,000 miles later, I noticed all four tires were wearing unevenly in the inside...WHY? What can I do to solve this problem? Should I buy & install shocks first before worrying about this?

ALL Advice will be deeply and humbly appreciated!!!

AWD & Turbo Enthusiast,

CRAZY KEN

the shocks you get all depend on what you want/plan to do with your car... my car is a daily driver which i also use for spectating at rally's, i rallycross it, have autocrossed it, and soon it will be a TSD Rally car as well...

i have the 18mm SPD bar, JC Sports strut brace, H&R springs... and the KYB/AGX adjustable struts.

I chose KYB because of the adjustability - I can change them up depending on what type of driving i am going to be doing... also as they are gas-cooled AND adjustable, $100 a corner is a very good price. There are lots of different types of shocks tho' - if you decide to go with KYB's, I can tell you of some sites to check for pricing on.

your tire wear must have something to do with your springs... possibly the tires are turning in a bit due to the 'lowering' caused by the springs... that's my best guess anyway...

Subie Gal, how easy is that to adjust the AGX on all four corners? I heard that KYB GR2 has a setting of 4f/2r like AGX, is that a good alternate too? What you daily setting?

good day...

Wink

the KYB's are very easy to adjust... the fronts are adjusted by simply lifting the hood and using a bitty screwdriver... for the rears, you actually have to climb underneath the car and reach around each wheel and give them a 'click'

it is my understanding that the GR2's are a non-adjustable strut - but i may be mistaken...

the AGX's are 4f/8r and my daily settings are 2f/5r - but most would probably go for 2f/4r - 2/5 is also what i will be running when i rallycross... it's a nice ride, and not too stiff...

let me know if there are any other questions...

Subie Gal,

Yes, GR2 is non-adjustable and I heard people saying that it has the stiffness like 2f/4r (my mistake in 1st post) on AGX. Actually, smaller number is stiffer or what??

Crazy Ken:

...buy the KYB/AGX for your Legacy, the best bang for the buck. ...with the 18mm rear bar, Eibach Springs, you won't be disappointed. As for the nose up / duck out of water w/ Eibach springs, that's only on the Impreza.

Crazy Ken:

I had severe tire wear problems when running the Eibach Springs w/ the stock struts. The Eibach srpings overpower the stock struts (can you say UNDERDAMPED), not to mention I went for lots of negative camber (-1.4 deg) which when combined w/ a small bit of toe OUT (better turn in for autoX) ruined the front tires in < 6,000 miles. ...with aggressive driving the lowered front end dives and goes way toe out under heavy braking. My tires even cupped on the inside like a sport bike tire. My cure was to install the KYB/AGX (more damping at 2f/4r), dial in some toe IN(about 0.2 deg total) reduce the negative camber to about -0.6 degrees, and yes I raised the front ride height (add a lower spring seat rubber cushion) a bit because I was hitting the front bump stops and my tires were rubbing (very aggressive driving and speed bumps) ...as for your rear tires, I also like a bit of toeIN on the rear (0.3 deg total)for better straight line stability. ...now > 5,000 miles and no more tire problems, plus the car handles great and is a very fun daily driver, even for hours on the Interstate (no twitchyness).

Cheers!!!

...yes you can use the same spring seat cushion (lower) as comes stock on the Legacy rear struts (something like $10 each from Subaru). Not sure why they didn't put them on the front. Alternatively you can put some plastic / rubber hose or coil wrap (as someone else suggested) on the bottom coil of the spring. With the mecahnical advantage it doesn't take much to increase the ride height. The spring rubber cushion or hose on the bottom coil also quiets the suspension down a bit, spring coil on strut, metal to metal etc.

Cheers!!!
