new vid added 4/30/06

when driving around all normal and slow everything is good and quiet.
once i get on it and the car starts to pull hard i hear a noticable whine coming from the engine bay.. sounds kind of like a supercharger.. not turbo whine!! i have read it might be alternator whine, tranny whine, or belts.. anyone ever heard this in their stock STI??? let me know what the hell it is!!

my car is a 05 sti completely stock

thanks

Hello, that's what you have a warranty for. Take it in and let them deal with it.

you know what, the first time I stepped on my '06 wrx, I thought the same thing to myself.... I had just brushed it off as normal.

This is my first turbo car tho, so I can't say much.......

At what speeds are u going? Once you hit 120mph on STIs probably WRXs also, there is a howling sound from the side mirrors on each door. There was a thread about this one IWSTI forums.

The sound is perfectly normal and seems to be common among subarus in general, my wrx has been doing it since day one and I have no problems, same with my friends outback and my other friends sti. I'm no expert, I can't tell u the caue of the "whine" but I seriously doubt its a problem, none of us have anything wrong with our cars.

my best guess is your getting alternator whine. If you happen to have your radio on, even at the minimalist volume setting, you might be able to hear your alternator probably because one of the power/speaker wires are shorting the chassis. If this theory is right, u will only hear it with the radio on.

By "once i get on it" do you mean high RPM wise or high load on the engine? If its dependant on throttle/load and not necissarily RPM, I think that would rule out alternator and transmission noise.

it does it with the radio off...
say your stopped and then go, let clutch out and start to accel (full throttle) at first car goes but once turbo hits it really starts to pull hella hard, thats when the noise comes.. my gf 02 wrx doesnt make anything close to that sound.. also, i used to have a turbo supra, so i know what the sound of turbo spool sounds like and its not even close.
im gonna do the intake silencer delete later today.
honestly im not worried about it, sounds to me that its totally normal.. just a characteristic of the sti

update...

i think its turbo whine now.. i watched my boost gauge when acceling and the noise starts right when i pass 0 bar. weird thing is stays at the same frequency/pitch and volume all the way up to .1mpa.. usually a turbos sound changes at it builds pressure.

ps heres a pic of my sti sitting next to my old supra (sold it to a guy i work with)

I drive a 03 wrx w/ a turboback....and when i installed the dp i took the intercooler off one of the gaskets from the Y pipe was kinda messed up, but i left it...so a week later my car started making a whining noise only when i was on boost, much louder from what i heard in yer video. It sounded somewhat similar but mine was super loud and it was louder outside. For me it was a leak bc a gasket was broken on my y pipe underneath the intercooler....but let the dealer take care of it...At first i thot it was cool...but then it was just unbearable. Thats what it was for me hope this helps

Could be your turbo taking a crap. Check the intercooler for large amounts of oil, also wiggle the shaft and see if there is any freeplay.

adding the short shifter will cause the tranny whine??? wonder if it's hurting the tranny (i'm thinking of a SS for my wrx)

usually aftermarket short shifters do not have as much sound dampening padding as stock shifters, so you will hear the tranny whine a lil bit. it sounds kindda like the turbo spool though.

i believe that whine that you hear is normal. my gc8 and my wrx tr made the exact noise when i get on it. so dont be bothered by the noise cause your going to hear weird noises all the time. just remember, its a subaru
