Default Someone explain the genocide going in Darfur to me...

Break it down for me. I am not familiar with African politics so I'm curious why this is happening in Sudan, what the history of it is, what I can do to help, etc. I don't want cliff notes...more of a comprehensive history of whats important.

The government was also accused of neglecting the Darfur region of Sudan. In response, the government mounted a campaign of aerial bombardment supporting ground attacks by an Arab militia, the Janjaweed. The government-supported Janjaweed were accused of committing major human rights violations, including mass killing, looting, and systematic rape of the non-Arab population of Darfur. They have frequently burned down whole villages, driving the surviving inhabitants to flee to refugee camps, mainly in Darfur and Chad; many of the camps in Darfur are surrounded by Janjaweed forces. By the summer of 2004, 50,000 to 80,000 people had been killed and at least a million had been driven from their homes, causing a major humanitarian crisis in the region.

BBC's Q&A about Sudan's Darfur conflict might be more reliable than Wiki:

geopolitical crisis cliffsnotes, vol. 1
by overtime

sudan:
arabic-speaking muslim sudanese self-identify as arabs
non-arabic-speaking dark-skinned sudanese (maybe christian, maybe 'animist') self-identify as african/black (think manute bol)
government is dominated by sudanese arabs
big civil war, lots of people die
sudan goes from having lots of parties to being a military dictatorship under islamic law
by the 90s america really needs sudanese help in busting turrists
american government gradually pressured by evangelical christians to save black sudanese 'christians' (never mind that many of them aren't, convert those later)
eventually the war ends, things quiet down, southern sudanese get some self-rule

darfur:
muslim populations in western portion of sudan but tribal and self-identifies according to tribal lines or as black africans
see that the 'black' sudanese have rebelled against the 'arab' sudanese and won some concessions
decide that it's a good idea to **** **** up, because the sudanese govt is full of dicks
sudanese govt says aw hell naw, sends in mounted thugs to terrorize/rape
large portion of population flees west into chad, even poorer/hungrier
world doesn't quite trust american intervention due to lost cred from iraq, plus sudanese government is putting down a rebellion (albeit brutally/cruelly)
african union attempts to put together peacekeeping troops, ****'s still crazy
US offers to supply troops for UN peacekeeping, who knows when it starts

Does the Sudan have any oil reserves?

If not, we won't really care.
If they do, we'll say someone there is part of some Axis of Evil and 'liberate' someone that we don't really care about.

yes they do. chinese developed - meaning the chinese bring their own workers, so it doesn't trickle down to ordinary sudanese or migrant workers from elsewhere in africa/south asia, but hey, cash money for the govt.

I saw some statistic recently that aids, famine, genocide and war will reduce the african population to almost nothing by 2010. It is moving faster, almost on a viral rate and will effect almost all the nations on the continent. Sad.

Durka jihad, in this case...

It's crap like this that shows up the UN for the complete incompetents they are. This has been going on for something like 3 years now, and they're still just sitting arounnd talking about it. It's surprising there is anyone left for the government to kill at this point.

On a similiar note "The bone woman" Clea Koff author of the book bone woman visited our campus today. In her book it tells of digging up mass graves in darfur and other locales.
