Cool Need Advice!

Finally, my 99 Legacy GT is back from the bodyshop...after a few months since I bought it. It hasn't run all this time and today I drove it back to my house and It overheats....it runs cool for a while and the needle stays where it should stay and all of the sudden it starts getting hot and the needle goes all the way up...I think it is the thermostat that's stuck....I think I will replace the thermostat...but I need advice...any of you has had a similar problem? Can I get a replacement thermostat at any auto parts store or should I buy it from the dealer? how about if I replace it with a "better" or "cooler thermostat" ?

any response will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Serg

Was the cooling system opened? Did you check the coolant level might be low or an air pocket in the radiator. May want to the cooling fan or switch. I would stay with the OEM part. Too cool will make the fuel system run richer.

Euroauto:
yes the cooling system was oppened! the radiator was taken out, so it was disconnected from the water pump housing where the thermostat resides and that's what I think is the problem? when I picked up the car yesterday I asked the guy if they had put coolant in the radiator and he said that only water.....well it seems they did not put enough water, so on the way back home I stopped and put antifreeze in it when I noticed that the engine was running hot. but the problems persists...
I'm concerned now...and won't run the engine until you send me more advice on what to do...
thanks for your response!

Euroauto is probably on the right track with the air bubble. They could fill the radiator as much as they want, if the block wasn't filled FIRST, it will overheat just about every time on the EJ motors. Alot of places don't know to do this. It could be quite a few other things but I would check that out first. After you change the T-Stat, take the top radiator hose off and pour coolant/water into it until it will not take anymore. Then fill the radiator. Also check to make sure they plugged the fans back in( if they were disconnected), although I don't think the car would overheat even if the fans aren't working. Hope you get it sorted out.

Thanks! Euroauto and shik
That was it! I "burped all the air out by running the engine with out the radiator cap in place and letting all the air out and filling it up with coolant....ohhh man! what a great car! I was affraid that I was going to have problems with it...but after driving it around town almost all day I'm really impressed with the ride comfort and style of it...I went also to do the smog check and easily passed...(with only 4400 miles in the odometer no problem), the mechanics there knew about the Impreza's winning records and complimented my car on how good it looks and was planning to go to the Subaru dealer to test drive one....well, I really apreciate your help! I'll keep posting from know on...

Question

Serg,

How's that old hood you have? Is it salvagable?. I am looking for that hood. If not how much did your new one cost? Any info would be great.

Thanks
Andy

Andy:
The guys at the body shop said that once you bend a hood like the one my car had is almost imposible to save them...so we decided to buy a new one...240 dlls. at QSubaru in Tennesse Phone #'s: 1-423-397-5775 and 1-423-397-9416 try to talk to Darlene tell her Sergio told you. it's probably better and Cheaper to just buy a new one than to try and fix the messed up one. Hope this helps!
