Cool Kartboy shifter

I ordered the Kartboy shifter from Teague's auto last week and it came in today. I put it in and let me tell you, this thing rocks! It feels just like the STI short shifter. It is also VERY easy to install. Getting the Legacy console apart is a joke. There are only 2 screws under the flip up console that you need to remove. The rest will just pop out. Its pretty easy getting the old shifter out but putting the new one in is kinda fun. I tried a few times with a piece of wood and a hammer but it kept bouncing out of the socket and as much as I like getting grease all over my carpets I had to try it a different way. I drilled a 1/2"hole in the wood to fit the shifter in to hold it in place and gave it a good whack and it went right in! I wanted to post this to let everybody with Legacys know that you can put the Kartboy shifter in. I also got the cusco shifter bushings but will wait for another time to put those in.

Ben, if it is the same design as the 99 RS shifters, then no it will not fit. Kartboy said he is willing to make some for the first gen Legacys but he needs pictures of how it installs and I'm sure he would want someone's shifter to try it out on. I would buy one in a second. The shifter in my Legacy is absolutely horrible.

Cool

Ya, I have a 97 GT. If you guys with a 91-94 want a Kartboy, why don't you go to a junk yard and rip apart a wrecked legacy. You could take pictures and buy the shifter to give to kartboy. Just a thought.

I ASSume this shifter will work in my 99 2.5GT? If so, this would be great. How much shorter is the throw? Can I still use the stock leather knob? And how much did it cost you?

Many thanks!

Thumbs up

The Kartboy shifter also works on MY00 Legacies. I installed it on my GT a couple of weeks ago. You can definitely feel the reduction in the throw, although there is a slight increase in shifting effort.

Cool

it cost 150 with the cusco bushings. But the shifter alone is about 80 bucks + shipping. Yes you can still use the stock shifter knob. And I would say the throw is about 4" total (1st to 2nd) but I will have to go out again to see. Oh and ya, my 97 is the same as your 99. (except I have the better MAF )

Thanks for the info.

Better MAF? Uhmmm, how can I say this? No.

Remember, my 99 Legacy 2.5GT has the same DOHC motor used in the 98 RS's. I have the exact same MAF as you do (and I agree, it IS the good one). My motor/MAF/etc is exactly like my brother's 98 RS.
