Post air intake

i just had a ride in a 2.5 rs impreza with a minnam intake and was disappointed at how loud it was... it was difficult to hear the radio and there was much resonance in the interior... very uncomfortable.

i was going to do a jcsports intake on our legacy, but now i'm not so sure. gtbguy says to get a cai but it's too much fuss to be pulling it off every time it rains (and it rains a lot in vancouver).

can u guys share your experiences with me regarding how civilized your intakes are in your legacy? i'm hoping it just because it's an impreza that is the reason why it's so loud...

ben, i thought hearing the engine was a good thing.

mine is stock sounding at idle, but "growls" under load.

you're probably not going to want a j-tube intake if you want to keep it quiet. your best bet may be to keep the stock air boxes, put in a k&n filter, and maybe pull the intake silencer.

yeah, the JC Sports intake isn't quite as loud as the Minnam...though it is much louder than stock. But that's a good thing

Ben,

I have a Weapon R Hyper intake that I thoroughly enjoy. I would recommend an oil catch can to any cone intake that doesn't come with one.

If you want every day drivability this is the one. I also have a 2.5" midpipe with an aerospeed muffler. This setup gives me almost silence at idle and normal, easy acceleration sounds stock. The big change is at WOT. It transforms. Its hard to compare the sound. I guess it sounds like a well tuned Honda exhaust except about 3 octaves lower. In car resonation is only experienced at WOT with the windows down (most of it is from my exhaust).

Personally I'd avoid foam filters (ie: Weapon-R, HKS etc) They deteriorate and get sucked into the engine... as well, you have to replace them, and can't "clean" them like a mesh filter.

gtbguy,

how often then would you change the filter to avoid this problem? Seems like that should be an simple solution ... hmmm... wonder how much the filters cost?

It gets pretty hot under the hood so I avoid getting air from under there:

I modified the stock setup to just get cool fender air:

Quieter too

an oil catch can would be a difficult thing for me since it's prohibited for emissions regs in my area...

i didn't know foam filters were that bad... but isn't the sti drop-in filter made out of foam?

since i have an ej22 i am not familiar with the ej25 setup... the ej25 has 2 filters?!?

i noticed that there is a company that makes a "shroud" around the filter that is supposed to help protect it from heat... will it help with induction noise too?

Hi Ben, just a quick one from Japan.

I can't remember if you have changed the Engine mamagement and sensors etc, but watch the AFS when changing out air filters.

This is the #1 killer of OE AFSs. Some "filters" let too much muck through and the AFS can get too dirty and start screwing things up.

Hope this helps. Cheers.

Oh, and the D revision has a Denso AFS - at least on the turbos. Have yet to see the guts of it...

Ben - US spec (Cali spec) cars have 2 air filters even for the older style cars. Here in Canada only the black air-box by the fender exists.

As well, your MAF is going to be ok, it's a HOT-WIRE type not like the '99RS' w/ HOT-FILM which are more fradgile.

I inherited a JC intake on my GT. sounds stock except WOT, then it has a pleasing but not irritating growly howl. My only concern is with the K&N...I am a little paranoid this thing isn't doing the whole job, especially with the removal of the 2nd filter box. I kind of wish there was a paper filter replacement for this intake so thatI would know for sure that proper filtration was happening. I cleaned the K&N last month and it is almost black again...hmmm...

i only had 1 filter (the one by the fender) on my 97 legacy. the other box was just that - a box. maybe they changed it over in 98 or 99?

For those of you who are concerned about the filtration power of the K&N's you can always move over to the APEX-i or the Blitz Filters which are dry elements, and have great filtration. The reason why the K&N's get black so quickly are because when it's oiled again, causes "pooled" spots of oil.

When I clean and re-oil, I usually do it overnight, allowing me to spray 3 layers of oil (very light layers), to allow for maximal penetration of the filter.

Well, personally that's one of the things I like about the K&N! You can clean and re-oil it as often as you like, and if done correctly, you can be assured it's doing the job!!! Why go with paper?, or the constantly degrading foam? The K&N is proven. Worry about something else!
