290 is the fastest way. It would be slow until you reach the town of Elgin (if you are leaving around rushhour) but after that it is smooth sailing. I make the trip every other week.

290 in my experience is definitely the faster way. I used to go 71 to i-10, but its not even close timewise. You can even take 290 in and take the beltway around once you get there.

if you have a dozen eggs send 6 of them one way, and send the other half dozen the other way.

take 290 down here, then take I-10/71 back up, see which one you like more, they are within 30 minutes of time driving.

290 to Houston, but 71/I-10 to L.J.

Kevin, it really depends on when you leave/arrive more than anything...

I go a crazy way. When I used to live in Austin I would take 71 to the other side of Bastrop (oops, I had Brenham written first) and then cut over to 21. Then 21 connects to 290 and 290 connected me to the beltway. Awesome drive, I loved the scenery -- it was pretty fast too. My friend and I made it in like 3 hours last weekend (maybe a little less).

Wifey and I lived there for 1 yr right out of college. It SUKKED. There are a lot of nice people down there, but living there was not for me. If I ever end up working in that area again, I'd live out in the swamp B4 LJ.

We went back last summer to take the kids to the Sea Center (pretty cool BTW). Just from the hwy I'd say they've added a few restaurants, a gym, and um, that's about it.
