Default JDM foglight install

So im about halfway done. So far ive got the bumper cut and Im on the verge of getting the mounting correct.

stock hole size vs cut hole size

test mounting. Since the USDM and JDM bumper and bumper beam arnt the same Ive had to cut up and drill the beam a bit as well as the JDM bracket

original bracket vs modified

How it should look when the bracket bugs are fixed vs ye old foglights

The easy part will be running the wires. I already have one relay for the fogs and i picked on another for the sides. Only need to run one more wire to the cabin.

Ill be posting a DIY on SLi in a few days (ive taken about 50 pictures so far!). I hope to be done the mounting tomorrow (still need the male end for the second fog switch, so the sides will have to wait)

Is there a way to control which bulb comes on? Or do both light up whenever you hit your fog switch?

woot, wiring

relays

switches

I still have to wire up the second switch, but that should be easy since the first switch is already hooked up (I can splice off of all the wires to it, except for the relay)

Technically I could put everything back together, but Id still like to fiddle around and aim them before I put the bumper back on. Id also like to paint the brackets and some parts around the radiator.

interesting comparo pic of how large the new fogs really are.

some measurements i took

what underneath my dash looks like

I've read some things that said these were combination fog/driving lights, but I've also seen something that said the outer lights were turn assist lights (that should come on with your turn signals to project light around a corner). Which is correct? Where do the outer lights project their light?

I thought they were turn assist lights w/ projector foglights.

yeah i read somewhere that the outer reflector uses turn signal bulbs, i would imagine it wouldn't be much good for anything else.

me personally, if i ever get JDM fogs for mine (it's either that or Hella Micro DEs), i'm just gonna hook the outer bulb up to the corner lamps.

The bulbs are 12v 35W. Theyre not supposed to blink, instead theyre constant so you can see curbs and such. I dont have them setup like that though. I have them wired up so I can turn them on whenever I want. They light up the ditches quite nicely.

Check out the DIY section at www.sl-i.net I have a full write-up on how to install them there.

12v 35w, are they 194 bulbs then? or those really small globular bulbs? i was thinking that if i do go with the jdm fogs, i'd just have them wired to the corner lights so that they are constant on (IE: the parking lights). that way they'd give a bit more illumination on the corners, and would serve as pretty good marker lights.

does anyone have any idea which has the better output, beam pattern, cutoff, etc... between the JDM BG fogs, and the Hella Micro DEs?

That would have to be a personal experience thing, TOL. There aren't any hard numbers because people mount these things differently, and there isn't a good way to collect the subjective data.

I can tell you that both would be a big improvment.
