Default What u all think?

Under the hood: The 2007 Lexus GS 450h will have a 3.5 liter V6 engine combined with a permanent magnet motor. Lexus says the GS 450h is rated at 339 combined horsepower with the gas engine and electric motor. Lexus claims the 0-60 acceleration is 5.2 seconds. For perspective, the 2006 GS 430 has a 4.3 liter V8 that has 300 horsepower.

I don't get it...the wrx with it's 226hp goes 0-60 in 4.6 and the sti does it in 4sec. How is it that with 339hp the lexus only gets 5.2 sec ???

electric motors get 100% of their torque at 0 RPM. It really, really helps out with the 0-60 times.

The Lexus probably weighs almost 4000lbs, especially with the heavy batteries that they carry.

I'm waiting for these things to be on the road for 5-8 years before I even consider buying one. How much will new batteries cost after the warranty expires and you're on the hook for the whole amount?

Two words ==> Turbo Diesel

Wish more of these would be on the road, or available as an engine option. I've been in my Uncles Turbo Diesel Benz wagon in Germany, and it has SERIOUS scoot.

Someday soon Markus, someday soon...North America is switching to the cleaner diesel fuel sometime soon. I forgot when exactly, but I've read articles where both BMW and MB are wanting to bring more diesels over once we have the nicer diesel fuel.

I think someone slipped something in your sausage.

WRX is 5.6 second
STi closer to 5
both Manual transmission and clutch dropping.

The Lexus is probably automatic and even 5.2 seconds might be a manufacture ideal.

Also electric engines and Gas engines have different power and torque bands. So you can't just combine the numbers, they have to cross on the power band charts and then at a RPM to Bhp and RPM to Torque level you will get a number set.

Electric is very good down low and as you all know gas engine typically are better higher up, especially if turboed. Also electric torque is very driveshaft snapping and you get lots of torque with little Bhp.

To learn more read about the Subaru parallel hybrid turbo. It adds 15 Bhp and 100 Ft-Lbs of torque. But not at the same place as the Turbo engine.

Give it a few years and there will be some mean elctric / hybrid cars released. Electric motor are way more efficient and like mentioned get max torque instantly. Some problems right now are electric cells are expensive and not that light. The turbo diesel thing can already be seen in VW's. They sell tons of cars with that format and they get excellent mileage. Every new jetta I see is basially a TDI so the diesel thing is starting to catch on in NA right now.

If you are going to compare anything, would it make more sense to compare apples to apples?
