fired it up today...it's much louder than i had anticipated but it's not running rough at all. i haven't driven it yet, monday i will get it trailered back to my house and put the hood / bumper and fenders back on (i almost always take the skins off when working on my motor) headlights in, etc and drive it around.

question: any utec users that had to adjust the knock sensitivity dramatically or disable it all together? (i guess i should ask that in EM&T)

What did you do with the cam gears and the cam sensor on the front of the motor.

hey, my frankenstein motor is smoking a bit...help me diagnose please. of course the engine itself is burning off the residual dirt and oil (expected) but there is some smoke also creeping out of the exhaust. not alot, but it's there and it's buggin me. looks like it's only a problem at idle, but i can't tell for sure. the turbo (1820) is spooling fine and i don't see any blow by in the IC piping.

all new gaskets, EVERYWHERE and the heads are being held on by ARP studs. i had the compression chceked it was 160-165 across the board.(cold). and leak down tested also came out 12 ,15,15 ,17...(cold also) . does that look straight? what do you think?

Did you fix your problem?

Your buildup is similar to what i would choose, i'm running a 1820 myself.

Have you got it tuned yet? Results?

okay so this motor is still pretty new to me, but here it goes...cold starts are still pretty 'in your face' loud but quiets down during warmup. almost all the slap is gone under any kind of load (higher rpms) then returns on deceleration. another thing i've noticed is this motor smoked alot at first, now it's not (much ). haven't tuned it yet, still running my 1820 / 650 / fmic maps from before...it's all good for now, more to come.

yes it is a usdm block
i am using the same utec / ecu i was before because the motor, obviously, has the same wiring harness and the heads are non avcs
the EM issue was one on the reasons why i built up a usdm and didn't go full on JDM.
