Delta Cams-Tech Question Inside-Coated??
Okay so I am doing an engine build and did decide to use delta cams in my setup. It seems there are no problem with them as far as I know but I was discussing these with a DSM'r and he warned me of a few things. Stock the cams come nitride coated to make the exterior more durable.....when the cams are welded and reground this coating is obviously taken off.
Now does this weaken the cam so much that it will actually deteriorate enough to where the valve timing will be affected? My friend with the fully built and stroked 4g63 says there have been many cases where DSM guys who reground their cams have had them break apart. Comments? Ideas? Suggestions?

welded cams can have problems, but I also know of people who have run them for a long time with no problems whatsoever. A co-worker who had a very heavily built GSXR1100 had a welded cam fail on him, and my experience with a welded "regrind" cam from a different manufacturer (one lobe wore down over 0.060") made me decide to never buy welded cams again. So far, I've only found TWE offering a non-welded regrind. But, they are significantly more money than the delta cams.

true the stock cams are nitride coated, but i think the delta regrinds are also re-coated after welding and heat treating. im going to use them in my franken 2.5 block w/ 2.2 heads. if they break ill become a believer to not get re-grinds.

IIRC, they dont weld them up. All they do is change the base circle and the duration a bit. For the money, they can't be beat.

none the less they are taking away the OEM nitride coating. I will settle this today when I call them.
