Default 1990 Legacy tranny/motor question

Hello my Subaru is a 1990 Legacy Wagon 4WD with an Automatic. and well when i first turn on my car and put it into drive and i hit the throttle it wont really go for about 5 seconds and then it will begin to accelerate. what could be the problem? also with the transmission sometimes when it downshifts to accelerate it like skips a gear and the RPMs go to the red line and then it shifts again to where its around 4 grand and then it begins to accelerate. is that normal? for the old Legacys?

the tensioner-type bands that grab on some pulley like crap. only have them adjusted by a qualified subaru technician. but i do belive the adjustment is on the driverside of the tranny somewhere. if its not the bands its the friction material on the discs. DO NOT CHANGE THE TRANNY FLUID!!!!! if you do your tranny will become WORSE.
