Question Another trans swap question

I just emailed my closest Subaru parts place about a 5speed for my L, so this is a question to all with experience swapping transmissions. To change my auto trans. to the 5speed, from what I know it should involve some cutting in the firewall and some light fabrication. But what I really wanna know is can I use the same ECU or do I need the ECU off of the 5speed car I'm open to any info or helpfull tips that would make this as easy as possible. THANKS.

Since the L came in a 5spd the swap should be pretty easy. I am in the process of swapping a 5 spd into a SVX and it is a pain. They only came as automatics so you have to do a ton of fabrication work. I will be using the stock ecu with a slight wiring change to accomadate the neutral switch and the clutch switch so I can still use the cruise control.

btw I have an extra 5 spd for sale (250 + shipping). It's from a 01 Forestor and has 411 gearing with a 1:1 center diff.

I just did this swap on my 93L, sort of. I did an entire AWD/Auto to manual conversion. As far as fitment you donít need to do any fabrication, the trans bolts right in, I think you need a manual transmission crossmember, although I may be wrong on that. As far as the computer goes the Auto computer will work fine you just need to make the ECU think it is in manual mode. The car uses a separate computer to run the auto transmission. http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/swap/swap.html if you read this is should give you everything you need.
