Default Speedometer failure - speed sensor?

Hello all,

Driving into work this morning, my speedometer needle on my '95 Legacy/Outback began to 'wobble' for a minute or so and then went straight to zero. The cruise control ceased to function at the same time (I assume that they both get their signal from the same place...)

Has anyone dealt with this before? Speed sensor perhaps?
Is this something that I could reasonably change myself? (Relatively accessable?)

isn't that year's speed/tach run by cables? maybe a loose connection?

I'd take off the cluster and take a peak, making sure everything is still hooked up right.

Well, mine has the same issue, and I checked first if the cable hooked up to a drill made the speedometer turn. The answer was yes. I knew then that the cluster, speedo and cable worked. There is only one option left (if you car is a 5 speed), and it's the tranny gear, but for that you need to drop the exhaust and tranny, disassemble the tranny, and I do not think it is worth it for me. So I followed a friend on the highway, and made marks on my tach, so I know my topspeeds in 5th gear.

Same thing hapened to me. I think it was $100 for the part. You can fix it yourself. Just un skrew the sensor from the passenger side of the transmission housing and replace the sensor. Shouldn't take more than 30 mins to do.
