Post Ideal shift points for 97-99 Legacy GT's

Since I didn't get any good responses from the post about torque/horsepower curves, I might as well ask this question instead. Does anyone know the ideal shift points for a 97-99 2.5GT?

Jason

I have found that 1st and 2nd gear build nice power all the way to redline using the full extent of the gear but once I got to third and fourth I found it best to shift around 5k-5.5k.

According to the dyno chart in the flyer for my '98, the torque peaks at about 4K and the HP at about 6K. Shift accordingly.

Basically the Subaru boxer dohc EJ-25 appears to have a really peaky power curve. I would say for ultimate performance, you are best off keeping the engine in a rather narrow powerband... My 'seat of the pants' experiance is 4,800 to 6,500 rpm the car seems to pull the strongest. I dont have any specific information to back that up, though.

I generally try not to exceed 6,500 RPM. Is there much advantage to exceeding the red line ? I think some Imprezas are actually redlined at 7,000 RPM...

Any time you're accelerating in the low gears, go for redline.

The WRX redlines at 7k, and yes, there is a benefit to pushing it all the way. The less shifting, the faster you go... if you don't push it all the way, you'll need third to get to 60, which will kill the 0-60 time.
