Question

Hmmm, wierd, need more info. Where is the noise coming from (be as specific as you can) can you 'feel' it or do you just 'hear' it?

BeAn, how many miles do you have on it? It could be alot of things but the water pump surley comes to mind. I've hear bad ones make anything from a whining sound, to a grinding sound, to a squeaking sound. I had mine replaced when I had the T-Belts done at just a bit over 100k, just because first gen water pumps are not known for their superior reliability For the price of one, it will sure save alot of hassle down the road if it leaves you stranded or worst case, your motor goes poof. If you did already have a new one, disregard this post .

To be honest, I've never heard of one only making noise at WOT, but I have heard of the noise being inconsistent( sometimes it would make a noise, other times it sounded normal), so in that sense I guess it's possible. A quick way to look is pop the hose off the pump, pull the T-stat out, and see if there is any metal shavings in the coolant inside the pump. The only problem is you'll lose most of your coolant in the process. A real bummer if the pump is OK.

If it were me, with 110k miles, I'd change the pump anyway. I think they're like 60 bucks or so. Even if it isn't the problem now, it most likely will be a problem down the road.

I've also heard loose crank pulleys make an awful racket. You can usually see those things wobbling when the car is idling.

I'd say the water pump.

My buddy had a maxima that would only make noise between 50-65 and once they changed the water pump poof the noise went away.

Bean, if your crank pully is wobbling, I would take it to a dealer ASAP and have them do it as it should be put on with an impact gun and it needs to be tighter then tight! Until then I'd drive the car as little as possible. There is a little key that fits into the end of the crank. When the pulley comes loose, the key can start start wearing out the hole it fits in. Once the key no longer fits into it's hole on the crank, you're in big trouble. At least that's the way I remember it( it's been a while).

As far as the water pump, I'm not a big fan of non-oem parts and for the price, I'd just get one from Subaru but that's me. You'll have to take the T-Belt off so it may get involved. If your not real confident of your mechanical skills, I'd have the dealer do it. Good luck.
