Angry Whistling/screeching Legacy

I have a 94 Legacy GT-B wagon, and it has one really annoying fault - it screeches/whistles at high speed

The noise seems to come from somewhere in the dashboard, it only occurs at high speed (starts at 85-105mph depending on the weather). If the weather is wet or humid it starts at a much higher speed, but on a nice dry day down to about 85mph.

It gets louder as I go faster, and it gets very loud.

Has anyone else had this problem or know what it is causing the screeching

Thanks

Paul (going deaf)

It's definitely from somewhere (in the centre?) of the dashboard. Its a bit difficult to narrow the exact position down as I don't fancy sticking my head under the dash whislt driving at 100mph

Paul, possibly the speedo cable? It's the only thing that I can think of in the dash that would have any chance of differing with speed. Sometimes when it is ultra cold out, my speedo will make a horrible screeching sound, just for a bit. Maybe it's just in some need of some lubrication. It's worth a shot.

Also check in the engine compartment,
my 99 GT wagon had this weird rattling
noise at a consistent 3250 rpm in any gear
and from the drivers seat it sounded like
it was coming from the dash somewhere
below the gauges, turned out to be the
cruise control vacuum actuator on the other
side of the firewall...a spring would
resonate around these rpms.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the ideas guys,

I thought that the speedometer was electronic on the BG sries legacies, but I will check this evening.

Subie Gal/M.S.P.T.

Thanks for the comment Jamie, but the GT-B is a Japanese Spec Car not European , we have to personnally import them from japan.
It is a BG (second) series Legacy with a 27-bhp Twin Turbo EJ20 engine, the B (in GT-B) stands for the Bilstein Supension that comes as standard

Paul

Whoops! that should have been 270bhp not 27bhp (not exactly worth all the bother of importing for 27bhp)

Niiiice car, Paul...

As you can see, your can and my car have a bit in common (nice color!)... well, except for that little issue of 105hp difference...

I am trying to complile a list of what parts are interchangeable between the different Legacy "cousins"... I know yours is a "BG" (J-spec Series 2), and mine is a "YBE" (US-Spec Series 3)... Do you know or have any sources that would be able to say what parts between the "BH" body and the "YBE" (don't remember the Sedan/Saloon body code)...

Specicially I am looking at the clear lens clusters to replace the amber lenses on the front and back corners, and if possible the stainless-steel sill plates for all four doors. And last but not least, I want the GT-B grill with the red-shield-lightning-S badge.

If you have any sources for these parts I am sure there are a few Legacy owners here that would be interested...

I am trying really hard not to hate you because you have the car I want...

A

PS - You can contact me via e-mail... since this is *really* off the topic of your screeching-wagon...

Cool

The 97 through 99 legacys have the hood scoop. The 00 don't. And I think its something like 70 posts until you are a scooby specialist.

Angry

I wish it was a tune, but it certainly isn't from the window - I feel that it may be the wind through the ventialtion system, but if thats the case why doesn't anybody else get it - unless its caused by the different shape bonnet (with the air scoop for the intercooler) or do US spec GT's have the scoop

(By the way, how many post till you are no longer a Newbie over here)

As another GT-B owner ('99 model), I have experienced the same curious noise. I believe it comes from the fan. My theory is that when travelling at speed, the air pressure is high enough to encourage the fan to travel faster than it would normally want, and a vibration is set up.
I'll try either turning off the ventilation system, or turning up the fan to a higher speed. Unfortunately, though when I'm doing 3 figure speeds I also tend to be easily distracted!
Regards

Hi again Tony

The same thoughts as I had, however I have tried turning off the climate control (no change whatever)- haven't tried turning it up though.

My next plan was to try using gaffa tape over different parts of the air inlet to see if that made any difference

Randy I have the part numbers for the rear lamps! I'll try Scott at Tacoma Subaru or maybe someone abroad can purchace them for you. I still need to find the center section or back-up light lens. It's just a bit different than the US-DOT lens.

Any vollys? to purchase parts or set us up with a dealer overseas?
