I went to the trusty Optimabatteries.com battery locator as I have in the past but it says there's no results for the 1998-2004 Legacy, surely there's a model that fits

On that jegs I have the 75/35 or the 3rd one down. I think the only differance between the models are the post setups and size

Is the battery sizes for the BE/BH the same as the BD/BG cars?

I just bought an Optima, and I had to guess which size.

The optima came with a plastic tray on top as a cover. I almost threw it away, until I noticed that the battery was a bit short and would have slid around (screw posts didn't go far enough down to secure it).

The plastic top tray actually clips onto the bottom of the battery, and it fits perfect.

Most battery size are the same no matter what the car is. Its all up to the user how big or how small you wana go.

Measure the stock battery and then find the optima thats the same size. If you want smaller go with a smaller one. The out put should be very simular no matter the size of an automotive battery.
